2011 Cherokee - NO Diesel?
« on: February 06, 2010, 12:33:52 am »
I checked out the all-new 2011 Cherokee.. It looks very nice, both inside and out. There's also a new V^ with more power and better fuel ecn. apparently. However, I am troubled by what appears to be the dropping of the diesel option, which is supposedly a very nice engine. That is too bad b/c that is the vehicle next on my shopping list (maybe next year). Why would the drop it? I see so many on the road in the GTA...

It really stood out among SUV's due to this engine..

Oh well, looks like diesels will never take off here.. North Americans are a stupid lot... what's the big deal I guess? it only produces an enormous amount of torque, 7500lb of towing with the gas mileage of a mid-size sedan.

Not having a diesel is likely because Fiat doesn't want to buy them from MB anymore and not having one big enough that they can adapt to use. If the car proves popular I'm sure they will look at rectifying that, especially if they view Europe as another market for it.

Italians make excellent diesel engines  (I've driven a few over there). I am sure they can develop a bigger one for the Cherokee if they don't already have one.

I suppose I will have to consider the uglier 2010 model next year.

I guess they would have no problem making , but to make were they can make money on it is different matter
It would have to pass Cal emission laws

EU should just match the Cal emission and our problems would be solved

NOOOOO    Cal (and Canada) should match the EU emissions laws.   Just about as strict for gasoline engines but realizing that diesels are different.

You are quite right Airb.   Blame the USA for having different standards for "light trucks" than for cars.

So have you folks looked at that Cherokee? Nice job by Chysler, eh? I think it's the nicer vehicle they've designed in along, long time...

+1 - the current position is ridiculous, imo.

Does anyone else like the new JGC (forget for a moment the company who makes it and everything else you know about it)?
From the pictures, the only thing I don't like inside is the foot parking brake and the counter intuitive manual shifter (left-right vs. forward/back).
The paper specs look good too.

I agree about the diesel. It was the one thing that made this SUV stand out and would have been a major reason for checking it out (had I been in the market for one).

Oh, I think they could scrounge up a big enough diesel if properly motivated: Iveco

I seem to recall the service interval cost for these diesels was out of this world. Anyone else remember hearing that?

**EDIT** Found this..possibly where I read about it.

"Consumer Reports may have discovered why owners of clean diesel cars might feel a bit suicidal from time to time. They recently took a long-term tester Mercedes GL320 BlueTec clean diesel into the shop to have its urea-based AdBlue exhaust-scrubbing fluid refilled, and the results were… eye opening.

The total bill just for adding AdBlue? A stunning $316.99. We were down to 18% full on the additive at 16,566 miles. It took 7.5 gallons to fill the tank, costing an eye-opening $241.50 for the fluid alone. The labor to add the fluid plus tax accounted for the rest. None of this was covered by the warranty…"

Gawd - who knew Urine was so expensive. Maybe we should start a micro urinary and sell it to the dealers! Or those diesel owners should consider storing their own! ;D

Somewhere on this forum last year I think, there was a well warranted complaint about the oil change cost for one of these Cherokee diesels for the expensive low SAPS oil required to keep the emissions system good.

Blame it on both the EPA and the MOT Canada for choosing to ignore the different characteristics of diesel combustion before setting standards.  ( It wouldn't be so bad if those standards were/had been applied to big trucks at the same time )

After 2 problem free years with my diesel ML 320 I am hooked on diesel.  I love it and can't believe there are not more diesel options in Canada.  If every driver could take a diesel vehicle for a week test drive I think very few wouldn't be converted - especially after not stoping for a fillup all week!

I drove a new Jetta Tdi a couple weeks ago and loved that too and was surprised at the strong acceleration and great auto transmission.

Urea is mandatory in US10 for commercial vehicles diesel engines. It is starting to be available at some truck stops for $1.38 - $1.40 a liter. As an OEM, we sell it for $1.50.

MB is selling it for $35/gallon???

The US10 engines are using about 5% less fuel than the US07's. That compensates for the cost of the Urea.
