From Day 2:
The only real oddball feature is the manual seat adjustments: although the driver is offered a power seat back, the fore and aft motions are manual.

I suspect this is to allow the seat to be lowered closer to the ground than if it had power everything. At least, that's been my experience with many cars in the past; if power everything then I usually can't lower the seat enough; if manual, no problem.

The 64 k service was around 700 bucks,of which over 500 was the transmission service.Maybe we did get ripped,I'll check.
Don't get me wrong,I love the VW's,since '93 our family has had 10 diesels, and only 6 gassers. The diesels are wonderful, but 6-700 dollars for a service while the car is still under warranty, seems a bit excessive.Maybe cancel the warranty, and I'll take my chances that a new car won't cost that much in repairs.
I remember my 01 Jetta TDI,required a timing belt at 64k,as part of normal maintenance! I got rid if that car at about 40k,but the dealer said the guy that bought it,went through the roof, when he found out about the service. VW got that changed pretty quickly.
What other cars of this class require a tranmission service like this, even at 2-400 bucks .
In the meantime,we're enjoying our 07 Rabbit 2.5,and our 08 Jetta 2.5,without the higher cost of service.

I have an '06 with the 5sp manual. I average 5.8 to 6 l/100k in mixed highway city (60/40 but the 40 in the city is rush hour stop-stop-stop and go).

It takes about 50,000Km for the engine to break in nicely - I noticed a drop in consumption from 6.3 l/100km to 6 or less l/100km at around that point. In long distance highway driving I have seen as low as 5.2 l/100km (and we are talking highway 401 speeds here not 'eggshell under your foot' driving).

Sure a Smart car might get a little better mileage but could you bring back two cases of wine from the Niagara region back with you or would you have to ship some of your luggage back home ;-)!

As for most hybrids, until very recently they were all listed as having equal or higher fuel consumption figures for highway driving.

Like one of the others here I would love to be able to trade my Ford Escape for a diesel Tiguan - if only VW would bring them over here. The Touareg is just *too* expensive!

It should, on a GTI not on a diesel, be possible to be in manual and sport mode at the same time. Sport mode seems silly without manual mode as it seems impossible to get sport mode to go above 4th gear at any even faintly legal speed in NA but really one would want to go to 5th and 6th between the corners...  ;D

I've read that the sport mode is limited to only 4th gear, no idea why they did that but it is what it is.

But I will agree, there should be a one more mode between sport and drive. Well, I guess that is what the manual mode is for.
A subwoofer should only be noticed once it has been turned off.

Surly CD can come up with a better analysis than these superficial comments, especially those of Day 2.
Really does not do justice to this otherwise excellent, informative and entertaining site.

Why would he take the time to write a "comprehensive" review? He's not a contributor of this site; James is.

James anyway to find out what the resale values are like when comparing Jetta petrol to diesel variants?
I am under the impression that the diesel should be about 20% higher.
And don't diesel cars generally out last their petrol twins?

Thank you for explaining that to me.... ::)

Just thought, since he owns a new one, he might like to add his comments, comprehensive or not.

Good grief.....

I might have misinterpreted your post, but it sounded to me as though you were 'defending' James by telling the poster to write up his own comprehensive review of the vehicle if he wasn't happy with what James was doing. That's definitely how I understood your sentence even after re-reading it a few times. If that wasn't the intent, I'm sorry.

Not that those numbers are actual reprensations of market value of the cars after 4 years (VW wanting to 'promote' leasing of certain trims of their cars more than others, etc), but they are still good indications that the TDI's don't hold their value that much more than gas versions, if at all.

TDI used car value will depend on the price of gas, and the difference between gas and diesel

If gas /  diesel goes to over $2a litre then the resell will be high
If diesel is $2 and gas is $1.50  then not so good

I no long that resale price in the price of a car, since who knows what will happen to car prices in 4-5 years
Has the resale value on a used Corolla and Camry drop like a lead balloon the last couple of weeks ?
 Cord where are you?
I look at a car have zero value in 5 years, that why I am not disappointed if I trade it in

I agree, I never really take resale value into consideration. I suppose if everything else was equal (price, features, quality, warranty), then maybe predicted resale value might come into play, but that's pretty much never the case.

ESP is, of course, standard on all US Jettas. . .

My guess is that Canadian Jetta buyers who can't pony up for our optional ESP, or who don't care, are likely the ones who need it the most.

Should be standard everywhere.

What makes you think richer car buyers are better drivers?  ???

How much more likely do you think someone who skimps out on ESP is to replace a broken headlight or buy a new set of winter tires?

L.Jack thanks for the comment.  I agree my day 2 was a little thin I am less of an interior guy than I am a driving dynamics type of person.

Greg Wilson has a review ready to publish (tomorrow morning I believe) that covers the ins and outs of the Golf Wagon very thoroughly.

I've never heard of an engine "breaking in" after 50,000km.

A drop in observed consumption can be caused by many factors and attributing it to "break in" is tenuous to say the least.

I have to say, that on 2 TDI's I had kept past the 50k mark,it sure seemed like the mileage improved after 40-45k.

I thought it was just me who thought that.
