Toyota recall: 2.3 million cars

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Toyota Motor Sales USA is recalling 2.3 million vehicles to correct a problem that could cause the vehicles' gas pedals to stick.

This new recall is separate from an on-going recall of 4.2 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles to correct a problem in which the pedals could become stuck under a loose floormat.

This new recall is to correct a situation in which the gas pedal could stick without the presence of a floor mat.

"Our investigation indicates that there is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position," Toyota USA group vice president Irv Miller said in a statement.

The situation is rare, according to Toyota, but can occur when accelerator pedal mechanisms become worn. The problem will usually develop gradually, Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons said. The pedal may become harder to press and may become slower to return when released. In the worst cases, it may become stuck in a partially depressed position.

"Toyota is working quickly to prepare a correction remedy," the automaker said in its announcement.

Owners will be notified when a remedy is available. In the meantime, Toyota wants to make drivers aware of the potential problem and of what they should do if it arisies, Lyons said.

Drivers should not pump the brakes as this can deplete the brakes' power assist. In the event the pedal becomes stuck, the vehicle can be brought under control with firm and steady application of the brakes, the automaker said.

The vehicle should then be driven to the nearest safe location, shut off, and a Toyota dealer should be called for assistance.

The vehicles covered under the recall are:

2009-2010 Toyota Rav4, Corolla, Matrix, 2005-2010 Avalon, 2008-2010 Camry, 2010 Highlander, 20078-2010 Tundra and 2008-2010 Sequoia..

The Camry Hybrid is not included in the recall.

Toyota owners with questions should call Toyota's customer service line at 800-331-4331.

blah blah blah Toyota blah blah blah I feel your pain; you've got a GM, it's worth squat and you owe on it.

Dude, if the displacment is EXACT, it's not "all new".  The intake is different, the VVT is now on both sets of valves  In the automotive world "all new" often means somewhat different

""Our investigation indicates that there is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position," Toyota USA group vice president Irv Miller said in a statement."

I guess that having to continually floor the pedal to get a Toyota to go faster than 50 km/h is what causes the wear?    ;)

No, this is new. From the quoted article. "This new recall is separate from an on-going recall of 4.2 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles to correct a problem in which the pedals could become stuck under a loose floormat."

Glad Toyota is dealing with it fairly promptly once they identified a problem.

Ford is about to get hit with a 1.67 million 2004-2006 Ford F150 defective airbag recall which they have been trying to sweep under the carpet.  Does that mean 2010 Fords are not worth of purchase?  Hardly, it happens to the best of them.  :)

Cars effected:

2009-2010 RAV4

2009-2010 Corolla

2009-2010 Matrix

2005-2010 Avalon

2007-2010 Camry

2010 Highlander

2007-2010 Tundra

2008-2010 Sequoia

A false claim like this almost put Audi under for good.  Toyota's much bigger and people will probably forgive and forget.

At least it is not a total recall. Toyota should not build cars that can travel over 100Km/h.  :)

Maybe what you need is a vehicle with lower original price and greater depreciation in trade-in value in order to be bothered by fewer problems.

Why?  I don't think most Toyota drivers even drive that fast in the left lane or right lane.  Maybe that's why Toyota are so reliable, their owners don't stress their cars, driving so ever gently.   It would be nice they could move over to the right to let me pass every now and then.  Or provide a remote for me to help them accelerate... :)

If I owned a VW, I'd be in a rush too.  Hurry up and get to the dealer before it breaks.
No place I'd rather be...

Toyota ponders new pedals, lubrication as fixes in latest recall
Hans Greimel
and Kathy Jackson
Automotive News -- January 22, 2010 - 4:16 pm ET

Toyota Motor Corp. is reviewing several potential fixes, including a new gas pedal and better lubrication, to address yesterday's recall of 2.3 million U.S. vehicles, a person familiar with the plan says.

The newly identified problem is caused by a mechanism that controls the accelerator pedal's return to the idle position after being pressed to the floor, the person said. Toyota spokesman John Hanson confirmed the source's report that the components were made in Canada by supplier CTS Corp..

A woman answering the phone at CTS' office in Elkhart, Ind., declined to comment. Messages left for two CTS officials weren't returned.

The latest recall follows an ongoing recall of 4.2 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles announced last fall to address unintended-acceleration incidents.

Yesterday, Hanson said the problem is rare and stems from pedals that “prematurely wear” because of a supplier's faulty pedal design. Today he said condensation can prevent the pedal from fully springing back into position, but he did not identify fixes Toyota is reviewing.

Hanson said the issue involves only CTS, one of the two parts makers that build the pedal mechanisms for Toyota.

The recall further tarnishes Toyota's reputation for top-notch quality. Last year's recall to replace floor mats, reshape accelerator pedals and make other fixes to address reports of unintended acceleration was Toyota's largest U.S. recall ever. It also pushed the automaker to the top of the U.S. safety recall list for the first time ever.

New problem

The latest recall covers 2005-10 Avalons, 2007-10 Camrys and Tundras; 2008-10 Sequoias; 2009-10 Corollas, RAV4s and Matrixes; and 2010 Highlanders.

The person familiar with Toyota's plan offered no timeline for the fix, but said replacing the pedal would take a long time because new components would have to be re-engineered and manufactured.

The glitch is not related to the car's electronic throttle control system, the person said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found no evidence of faulty electronic controls in Toyota vehicles, yet the technology remains suspect.

“For some incidents, the only other explanation is the electronic controls,” said Clarence Ditlow, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, based in Washington. “Toyota keeps saying there are no problems with the electronic controls, and we simply disagree.”

Toyota's electronic throttle control system has dual sensors backstopping each other in monitoring the accelerator pedal's position, along with two more sensors double-checking the throttle position. Meanwhile, a control computer actuates the throttle and a monitoring computer surveys all the computer signals in the circuit.

If any abnormal signals are detected, the engine is immediately returned to idle
