After 3 Jetta TDI I am still puzzled by people's comments on the cost of maintenace of diesel models.
The dealer charges me around $70.00 for oil and filter change. And that is with the recommended oil.
My 2009 requires changes every 16,000 km. I have been changing oil at 8000 KM, in my case twice a year. If I were to drive a lot I would stick to the 16,000 KM imtervals. I compared my service cost with co-worker who drive other non-diesel car and my cost compare quite favorably with anything else out there. I live in Alberta and never had problem  finding diesel and most of the time I pay much less than for gasoline. Diesel cost less to produce than gasoline so it is not subsidies than keep cost down. In Europe fuel cost is very high (gas and diesel) and diesel engine are more efficient, that is the reason people buy more diesels.

Thank you VW salesman.  ;D Enough thread hijack. I apologize. Back to discussing Shamu the Accord.

What is with everything getting so f'ing big?  I loved Toyota and Honda products thanks to their tight dimensions and trim exteriors.  No wastage!

Now, our Corolla is nearly as big as the Camry was not that long ago, the Camry is bigger than the E-Class Mercedes we owned, and thought huge, and so on.

Honda has done a better job of keeping things trim, well, until now.  Everything is getting too large, too heavy, and in the case of this thing, lacking in a reasonably priced base trim level.
No place I'd rather be...

It's a disturbing trend. The exterior gets "beefed up" without the corresponding increase in the interior. I am willing to bet that my Volvo wagon (narrower and shorter than the Cross tour) holds more real world cargo and people. The next gen Volvo wagon increased in footprint with very little increase in interior room. It's weird.

It is true, all the vehicles are getting bigger....

As I have stated here before, the dimensions of my M3 are almost exactly what the dimensions of my 1986 BMW 535i were back then. I loved the size on my '86 5er, thus the M3 is about the perfect size for me once again. My '08 535xi was definitely about a foot longer than either of the '86 5er or the new M3.

Is the market demanding these larger sizes, or are the makers forcing them on us? I know my bro-in-law is a large guy, and he cannot fit into many cars today. He has been buying the full size Chrysler 3M or its kin for the past several years as they are large enough to take his girth. Common problem, I think.

 :iagree:

A couple of years ago I came across an E30 M3 in what I thought was pretty good condition for sale. I took it out, and the size just seemed so right, and the windows were huge compared to the gun-slits more and more cars are moving to now.

(By the time I got back, it was leaking oil pretty severely, so that was the end of that)

The new Outback is marginally shorter than my version, but wider with a longer wheelbase, the end result is bigger rear seat, but smaller cargo area. They raised the roof to somewhat compensate, but it's floor space that's the limiting factor for most of the big stuff I haul, not height.

People are only so big, once you have enough room, how does having more make it better?

People are only so big, once you have enough room, how does having more make it better?

Spaciousness is a luxury.  You don't NEED it, but many WANT it.  It's no different than asking:

"Once you have enough power to merge on the highway and maintain speed uphill, how does having more make it better?"

"Once interior plastics are soft enough to not cut you, how does making them softer make it better?

Etc.
"Geography has made us neighbors. History has made us friends. Economics has made us partners. And necessity has made us allies. Those whom nature hath so joined together, let no man put asunder. What unites us is far greater than what divides us." -- John F. Kennedy, addressing Canadian Parliament.

So let me get this straight; you think it's ugly?
