What (or where) is Hankook Optimo 4S?
« on: December 25, 2009, 05:18:09 pm »
I google and read article about Hankook Optimo 4S is one of the very few All-Weather tires like Nokian WR and Yoko W.Drive.  However, neither Hankook site nor 1010tire lists this tire.  Only a few European sites  list them.  Are they not available in North America?

Thanks.

According to my guys, this will be available in Canada this spring/summer.  He is actually running the 205/55R16 on his car this winter to see what it is like and is so far impressed (he imported them from the UK).

I will need both new all seasons and snows for the van by next winter, so I will consider this since it is actually available in my size 235/65R16 (at least in Europe) and the Nokian is only close at 225/70R16.  Won't consider the Fortera or Assurance Tripletread..too many disappointments with goodyear over the years.

Thanks for the info.

I also have 2 cars waiting to change tires soon.  I hope Hankook has better pricing than Nokian.

Both Yoko and Goodyear do not have the size that I need

Looks like Oakville Honda is carrying these now....

Yes!  I saw a civic today with these on it.  I suspect they are now available at any Hankook dealer (I had inquired quite some time ago)

OK Tire carries these, they've been harsh advertising these tires a few months ago and were giving away one set of these tires to fans of OK Tire's Facebook page.

I inquired Oakville Honda and they replied saying that they don't ship out of province.

Canada Stig, did you get any response from your inquiry?

Thank you Dkaz, I will try OK tire.

My guy is closed until the new year.  And strangely, I drive a Honda, and live in Oakville!  Maybe I should just go to the stealer...but I suspect their prices are not cheap.

OK Tire is exclusive on this tire in western Canada, at least for the time being.

Ok Tire has better pricing on these than Oakville Honda. Oakville Honda actually buys the tires from an OK Tire franchise. Just to let you know call different OK Tire dealer, pricing is different from store to store since they are individually owned. The Westen Store seems to have the cheapest prices. Anyway tire seem to be pretty good on my 09 Forester. Much, much better than the stock tires.

Do these have the severe snow symbol? I didn't see the 4S or the other all weather tires (eg. WRG2) on the following list.

http://www.rubberassociation.ca/wintertires.html#winterTire10

Is the 4S much different, price wise, from the Nokian WRG2?

It has the symbol but the Rubber Association won't list All Weather tires on their website.

Just a quick review on the 4S. Had them installed on my 09 Forester  (225/60/16 102H) for about two weeks now.
All I can say is what a great tire. Handles corners extremely well, no feeling of the tire rolling over the sides like the OEM's. Quite sporty actually, car feels 100% better. Did go through some snow last week and tire was solid. The Forester has amazing traction and even with the crappy stock tires the car would always get up and go without spinning the wheels. However, stopping was scary as the tire would allow the car to skid. Going around a corner the back end would fishtail. With these new 4S I do not have these problems anymore.
If you are looking for your size on OK Tire website it might not be listed, same with the Hankook international page. Ok Tire has a pamplet with sizes you will not find on the web. Here is a listing for anyone looking.

Thanks for all the info.

I made a couple of quote.  I live in Regina, there isn't really any competition and the price is about $130 more the nearest OK Tire which is about 200Km away.

Any chance the exclusive agreement stop and 1010tire can carry it?

Thanks.

I'm in Regina as well and put these tires on a 05 Malibu recently. I didnt find the price any different than any other quality tire and yes, OK Tire has these exclusively. Information is quite limited on the tire but I did find a bit on some European sites. AutoBild loves the tires and rated them very high. There's a article from the AutoBild magazine on the Hankook euro site.
I'd post the link but as a new user I cant. For the info go to hankook's euro site at hankooktire-eu
Add the rest of the url yourself and end with .com

The ratings are always good so I tried them. So far I'm pleased enough but it's summer now. I'd have to say that if you're a really picky or aggressive driver that for summer tires these arent the best. They do handle nicely, better than my original Bridgstones so I'm happy. Where they do shine is adverse weather such as rain and snow. In rain they are great but I'll have to wait a few months to test them in the snow and cold. Overall I'm pleased and would recommend them to people who dont want to change tires from winter to summer and for people who normally use all seasons year round, these would be much better. I dont drive that aggressively, my main concern at this point is safety and I believe these are a good choice for that.

BTW these tires do meet the requirements for winter tires in Quebec or other provinces that have winter tire laws.

Here is part of a recent poor review of the Optimo 4S "In my opinion..not even close to the traction of a Snow and Ice tire. In the snowy, slippery conditions of Canada they are simply, in my opinion an "All Season" tire. Our winter season is approaching in a month or so and I'm seriously considering taking these back to the dealer and asking what he will do for me. I do not want to run these for another winter, especially as my wife drives this as her primary vehicle year round. I've driven a lot in dicey, Canadian winters and these tires certainly do not live up to the advertised efficiency in wintery conditions."

Is this tire, like the Nokian WRs etc and similar tires just a mediocre performer in all seasons?

It's a compromise...for winter performance: Winter tire > All Weather tire > All (Three) Season tire

....for summer/spring and fall performance: All (Three) Season tire > All Weather tire > Winter tire

Most of the BFG AT T/A KO have the severe snow symbol (mountain snowflake). Having used this tire in winter conditions, I would recommend a different tire....upgraded to a set of entry level studded winter tires (Arctic Claw TXI). Not sure how the BFG AT got it's snowflake....I personally would not recommend it....very poor on ice performance.

I know the old WR Nokian 'all weather' tires are not good in snow. Ice they're OK - better than all season, but not as good as any winter tire (except maybe the high performance winter tires). My wife likes them though as its saves the hassle of changing tires twice a year. She's in the process of getting new WRG all weather from Nokia. She has a Highlander though (AWD) so IMO the combination of an AWD vehicle and an AWT (All weather Tire) are good, but if you have a FWD or RWD, it's a no brainer - you get winter tires for winter and all-seasos/summer tires for late spring, summer, and fall.

In the typical city, most of the driving during the winter is on dry roads (especially on highway) with occasional slush/ice/snow/packed etc. I wonder then, if a true winter tire would actually be less safe than an "all weather" tire.

On the auto-motor-und-sport site, the Nokian is rated higher than the Hankook Optimo 4s. Use google translate to see
