Ford is on the right track with winters as an automatic 'included' feature - even if the reality is that it is built into the car price. 
Even if you had to pay for it when you buy the car, lumping another $800 on top of the price and paying for it over 3-5 years is nothing. People have no problem springing for leather, upgrade stereo or sunroofs but when it comes to winter tires that can make driving safer it all of a sudden becomes a lot of money.
Generally other options don't need replacing at very high intervals however, where's winter tires in many areas of Canada will wear at a shockingly fast rate due to many winter days being relatively warm and having no ice on the ground.
Anyway, the tire companies thank you for your support - the only thing better one product to an individual consumer, is selling that same consumer two products. If I had control of a tire company I'd further this trend by offering fall and spring tires as well!
