I'd be curious to know how many of those 70 vehicles had proper winter tires... it really should be made into a law across Ontario just like it is in Quebec.

If people had proper tires, AND DROVE TO SPEEDS APPROPRIATE TO THE CONDITIONS, most of these big pileups would be prevented. But no... most people would much rather be stupid, save a couple of bucks and drive with balding tires and then make sure to go as fast as they can to get home 5 minutes quicker. Idiots.

I drive that stretch of road often, at least twice a week on average.  I am constantly struck (thankfully not literally!) with how indifferent and inattentive Ottawa drivers are.

I agree, Ottawa is an awful place for bad drivers, outright ignorant and curt comes to mind.  Crazy to say I feel safer in Montreal

so it was resulted from severe fog condition, along with winter weather and other prevailing condition.. eh?

is there any lighting solution that can mitigate the almost crippling visibility caused by fog?

I've seen fogs so thick, you literally couldn't see 2 meters ahead...  in these situation even if we had lights on, we have about 10~15 meter visibility( judging by cars' rear lights appearing out of nowhere about 10 meters ahead.)
..  how are you supposed to cope with this?

is the best way slowing down?

..NO..the best decision is to....................................FOG OFF.............

perhaps mandate those BRIGHT RED rear FOG warning lights they yave in Euroland and cats eyes in the lane dividers in KNOWN FOGGY areas...................just back from a trip to Hilton Head and on the way thru Erie and environs NOTORIOUS SNOW/FOG belt they had lots of cat's eyes...useful even on dark rainy sleety nights as we encountered..............

of course telling 401 IDIOTS to SLOW DOWN is like telling TIGER to kep his balls in the locker room..........................

Looks like Instrument flight rule conditions...and the controllers weren't providing good separation.   ;D

Are you rated for that BTW??

Negative GhostRider....

Takes a lot of time (read $$) and a lot of practice.  An IFR plane helps too...mine is nowhere near it...which I'm perfectly fine with.
If it flies, floats or f#%&s...rent it.

At least the geese are smart; they fly south.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

And what does Ottawa have that other cities don't? A high percentage of government workers. Say no more.  :-X

As someone who was there for over 3 hours...It all started when an OPP pulled out on the 416 from one of those U-turns...the OPP basically cut a driver off...driver panicked...the rest is history

Proof?

I think I remember reading a comment on the Citizen's site, in response to this story, that he/she was doing 95-105 just prior to crashing.  ::)
