Thats it. I am going to quit helping morons in the winter.
« on: December 10, 2009, 11:21:55 am »
Winter has descended in Calgary. The first couple of storms always seem to catch the clueless and lazy by surprise. Last week I was helping one of these people. The middle aged man had gotten his SVT Mustang convertable high-centered in front of my driveway. It didn't take much to get hung up as the well worn BF Goodrich performance tires didn't offer squat for traction. I got the impression that the snow had taken him by surprise and he had spent the last few days limping his car home. (I live in a hilly area so he got the car home in stages, kind of like an Everest expedition.) We finally got him moving again and he disappeared towards his home.

I figured it would be lesson learned and the SVT would be tucked away until spring. I was wrong. Today I am following this joker as he white knuckles it down a small snow covered hill and then sit while he spins out at the 4-way stop.   ::)  I think this clown is going to try to drive this thing like this all winter. Next time he gets hung up I am just going to point and laugh. ;D

If this guy is driving an SVT Mustang, he should be able to afford winter tires (hell, if you're driving a car, you should factor in the cost of winter tires with operating costs). A RWD car is worse IMO in winter than FWD. Regardless, winter tires are required for winter conditions on all vehicles.

Maybe when you see him next time, you should suggest that he buy winter tires.

If it was me, I would've left him in my driveway and closed the door. He should be smarter than that. Hopefully he would've learned his lesson but that's asking too much from him.

Agreed.  Kinda like the lady in the BMW 3-series I helped push.  She thought the best technique for getting moving was to put it in drive and keep her foot on the gas.

If she had the slighest idea how to rock a car free she wouldn't have needed a push.

Yesterday was a fun day driving along in my Sportage! I must've passed 10 cars stuck on the sides of the road. Nothing beats having an AWD drivetrain with some decent ground clearance!  ;D

Last year, just at the corner by my house, a new E-class 4-matic(!) was stuck at the stop sign.  As I was coming home (in my Miata, no less), I thought "I'm not going to get stuck there too" and just kept my foot planted and went around him, managing to get all the way to the base of my driveway before finally getting stuck.  25 minutes of shovelling and my car was safely in the garage.

During the whole time I was shovelling, I noticed two others were helping the Benz driver try to get his car un-stuck.  Finally a third person came by and I watched him poke his head through the driver's window, reach in and push what must've been the traction control 'off' button because lo and behold, right after, the Benz kicked up some rooster tails of snow and off it went.  With the TCS cutting power to the 'slipping wheels' I guess no wheel was getting any power at all!

Saw two people skid right through stop signs today, even with snow tires people don't give themselves enough space to stop, muppets.

We are all making the mistake of thinking that "common sense" is common.  I would seem to fit that conclusion, as I ended up "off road" last week when I slid through a snow plow burm into a field.  I was on a service road to a jobsite and doing 40kph, crested the hill, saw the corner and tried to brake...ABS cut in immediately not allowing any braking, so off I went ???.  Determination from my companies incident report was "driving too fast for the road conditions"...they are right, if I was doing 20 or 30 I probably wouldn't have ended up in the field needing to be pulled out.  I also should have replaced my "All Terrain M+S" tires with winter tires (done on Friday), either of these solutions would have probably kept me out of the field. :-[  Just in case you are thinking "duh, idiot", there is still 1/4" or 5mm tread depth on the tires, they just have little traction on ice.

I made the mistake of thinking that I could make it one more season without having to spend $1600 on tires (35x12.5R17 not the cheapest size).  We can all have a lapse in judgement from time to time.  I'm just glad no one and nothing was hurt/damaged, just embarrasment and paperwork afterwards.

Back on topic, on behalf of the "Morons", I would like to thank you for putting up with our stupidity and helping us out... ::)

Courageous post.  there used to be a thread entitled "Interesting Morons We've *Been* on the Way to Work".  After a few posts, the thread died.  I guess there aren't enough morons here.  We sure are good at calling others "morons", though I think it's kinda fun to think we can learn from one another's mistakes!   ???
