Bob's Ridiculous "What Car?" Thread...
« on: December 10, 2009, 12:11:39 am »
OK, this is ridiculous because I don't have the cash yet, but am banking [scuse the pun] on getting something next year.  I also don't really have a budget but I'm gonna set myself one of around ~$400 per month.  So this would either get me a 2-3yr lease or a 5yr loan of around $20K. (I think)

The one thing I prefer about car ownership, is owning something interesting.  I hate cars that become appliances, they must have a soul.  Now given that I have two kids some of my choices are limited by my situation, so no two seaters for example, but there are many interesting cars out there, I just need to find one.

Much as I like brand new cars I am swayed towards getting something used, just so I am not paying for the depreciation and then ending up with nothing at the end of it.  But for my budget I can’t seem to find anything exciting…  The lease always seems the easy way out.

Lease Car: Easy, WRX 265, job done.  It just ticks every box.  The only other car I would consider new would be the Genesis Coupe but apart from the smaller back seats to fit the kids into I think the depreciation would be heavier.

Used Car: Well the list of “interesting” cars is endless… (bear in mind some of these will be over 5-10yrs old)

Audi Estate (A4/A6 Avant)
A8
BMW 3 series wagon (or 5 or 7 series)
Range Rover
Lexus something?
Subaru Legacy Wagon? (Although Mitlov put me off)
80’s Merc (SEL, SEC, E500?)
Volvo wagon.
Something domestic of which I currently know nothing about? Like that Lincoln MKVIII RR had.  Something big and wafty like a 3yr old Buick?  A big truck would be fun! (bear in mind a lot of the domestic stuff you would consider boring is pretty interesting to me, OK maybe not the Buick, but they are reliable!)

Ideally I want something large enough to fit a lot of photography equipment in, lighting stands etc. so a wagon/estate would be perfect.  If it's a coupe it has to be a hatch. Plus a big engine, RWD and a manual transmission would be preferable.  The one thing with some of the older cars I have listed is that I don’t know what was sold in Canada and to what degree, so some of them are pretty hard to track down.  This is where you guys 'n' gals can really help me out.  ;D ;D

What are the best websites for used cars, www.autotrader.ca doesn’t seem to have much, and what about classics?  Also should I consider importing something from the US?

Ideas on a postcard please..  :)

P.S. The reason I would like to stay away from a lease is that I want to get to the point where I can switch cars relatively often with no large financial penalty.  I figure if I can buy something for $20K that has already depreciated, then maybe it would be worth $10K by the time I had paid for it.  Then every year or so I can add some money to that pot and get something faster.  And you people know what it's like, even that new car loses it's shine when you get to 2-3 years of ownership no matter how good it is... car people just yearn for something different.

In the UK I had 3 new cars in the space of 6 years, and paid for it.  For some reason moving to Canada has made me more fiscally responsible!  :rofl2:

USED Genesis 2.0T?

Big Truck?  Gotta be a Lincoln Navigator....came with a 5.4L DOHC V8 !!   ;D

How ridiculous can we go?  How about a JDM RHD R32/R33 Skyline GT-R?

Import a 1st Gen GTO from the USA?

I did look at Saab 9-2X Aero's, I thought they were overpriced TBH, for what they are.

I am liking the Lexus GS300/430.

Have you seen the price of used Genesis 2.0, they are nearly asking the new price!!  Plus no hatch which rules it out.

My GS400 was friggen' awesome!  The V8 is tough as nails.  Though they make a turbo kit for the GS300.  Lotsa aftermarket support too.  If you look at the GS430, make sure it has a Mark Levinson stereo.  It's....beyond words.

Here's my GS

In your BMW ideas section, my guess is that any 7 is going to be much too large for you. Maybe even the 5 is pushing it. OTOH, the 3 wagon is ideal, IMO.

Also in the BMW camp, the new X1 is coming, should be here in 2010 as a 2011 model year. Could be interesting!!

Jetta TDI wagon??
2011 BMW X3 35i Vermillion Red, MSport
and
2012 Toyota Camry SE V6 in Alpine White

Why would a 7 be too big?  ???  I like big wafty barge exec sedans, and if the rear seats go down there may be enough room for my gear.

3-wagons seems to be made of unobtanium, especially ones with manual transmissions.

X-1 is too small and too expensive, if I was going to shell out for a new BMW it certainly wouldn't be that one.

Jetta wagon sounds possible, if only more people made RWD wagons...  :-\

I think my ideal car would be a cheap 5-series wagon with a manual trans and V8. But I don't think they exist.

Nice car RR!  :)

I don't mind high mileages on certain brands, but to get an S4 for $20K it's gonna have well over 100,000km on it.  Not sure I trust Audi's enough to buy a car with 150,000km's on it...

Used V70R MT.  If you can find one, it'd be awesome.  Family-friendly, driver-oriented (though other cars are objectively faster), and character in spades.

Idea number two:  Did they ever sell the "Super" version of the Buick Allure in Canada, with improved brakes and suspension and a 300 hp, 323 lb-ft, LS4 V8?  Admittedly FWD and automatic transmission, but still kind of cool in its own bizarre way.

a 1st gen GTO.

Ooh, good suggestion.  Good chassis, great engine, steep depreciation means good prices, and unlike the new Camaro, a proper back seat for the family.  EDIT:  Just realized it said "first generation," not "most recent generation."  My bad.  Ignore the "good chassis" part.

The fastest librarian's car ever:

Sleeper?  Yeah, that sounds about right:

One of the most underrated cars of the decade.  A rebadged Holden Monaro which didn't sell because people wanted the less powerful, less capable, less-practical (back-seat-wise), but great-looking 2005 Mustang instead.

Marauder uses the old Mustang Cobras 4.6 DOHC 32 valve V8.

Oh!!!  Here's a good one.  2003 Mustang Cobra aka "Terminator".  This had a supercharged 4.6L DOHC V8.  390HP, 390TQ.  It had independant rear suspension.  The engine was built like a brick you-know-what.  Iron block with Zolner pistons and Manley H beam rods.  With a Kenne Bell supercharger swap, 600+ HP.  It was a cool car.  Can be had for reasonable money

This is turning into the cheap PC thread...  :rofl2:

OK, one more thing, it can't be too costly to insure.

The GTO is nice, did they ever sell them in Canada?  And if not can you still get parts? (Also seeing as Pontiac will be gone soon)  Would importing anything from the states bump the insurance up?

It didn't affect my Supra, which came from Georgia.

I like the Marauder actually!  And have always been a fan of the Monaro/GTO.

I don't trust the MS6, rust, engine mount issues etc.  Plus not enough space for light stands.
