VDK love your sig!  :rofl2:  :rofl2:

Question, why does everyone shovel the wet (i.e. back-breaking) snow when it will be gone in a day or so?  Why not just wait for it to melt? (as the forecast says)

Thank you Sir, you're very kind.  ;D

Because sometimes the forecast is wrong and everything freezes then it is a mess

"why does everyone shovel the wet (i.e. back-breaking) snow when it will be gone in a day or so?  Why not just wait for it to melt? (as the forecast says)"

Hey, that's what the City of Toronto's mentality was 2 years ago when it came to snow removal, "Let Mother Nature do the job, it should be warm enough, so let the sun melt it and we'll pocket the savings while we still charge the taxpayer an arm and a leg for snow removal".

Nice to see things never change with snow removal from the City of Toronto, I thought about calling in the Army, as the city crews left literally, boulders of wet snow. You had to chop it up with a shovel. They are all over the street as well. Great job to the snow removal crew!!!

OFTEN the forecast is wrong and in mid December in Ontario the trend is colder not warmer.

If you have family who owns house, maybe a person can get free storage in the basement.

Exactly what I did when I lived in a condo, in Vancouver.  Yes, I used winter tires there despite the fact people claim there's "no winter" there.  I could have stored them in my locker, but thefts from there were quite high, and my dad had free storage in his basement and lived only 5 minutes away.

Bob, it's our natural instinct to shovel snow! and why take the risk that the lump of wet slush may freeze into ice blocks on the drive way, then you are really pouched till it melts.

5 cm is hardly a winter storm, I can't believe people thought this was bad.  But 5 cms with ice is worse than 15cm with no ice.

Either way winter tires should be mandatory. I don't really care if people have been driving for 30 years, it's all about traffic traffic traffic. Im sick of waiting for people to go up a 5 degree incline, sick of people spinning out, not accelerating. Yeah drive safe, but traffic would move much better if everyone had a set of winter tires.

Amen brother.

Real Toronto Weather Bulletin.

The real storm day didn't have much of a storm, it passed over the lake through to eastern towns. There was some snow early in the morning, then rained all day, all the snow disappeared. The tail-end of the storm hit by midnight, some snow on the ground with wind gusts to 56km/hr all day long into the night the next day. Windchill is freezing the extremities off walking around, particularly the tunnel effect between buildings in downtown Toronto and open areas on the outskirts.

Driving was ok, both days.

Not to question the advantages of winter tires, but I want to have some discussion on the height of the snow cover.
At 15 to 20 cm snow, winter tires don't make you invincible... I got stuck in the back alley in my RX-8 Friday.

Now heres a scenario for you guys.
-Low clearance car with winter tires or
-High clearance 4x4 truck (company truck) with all-seasons?
15cm height snow (the ground clearance of the RX-8 and most cars?)

I drove my friend to the airport (about 30km out from Edmonton) in the RX-8 last Friday and there were times I almost got stuck and wished I had taken the company truck instead.
In some cases ground clearances govern over which vehicle should be to used (and not the tire type)

I totally agree, ground clearance is an issue. I almost got stuck a couple of times, my car is lowered about 1.2 inches.

It's easier than chipping lumps of ice that was wet snow previously.  Things tend to freeze up overnight in December.

Things are better in Quebec since snow tires are mandatory.

Guy- Good to hear. I wish the Ministry of Transportation in Ontario would smarten up and make them mandatory for all vehicles. There is no denying winter tires play a critical safety role in winter driving conditions. I won't even rent a car in winter here as they never come with winter tires.

Its funny how fast the govt will put in an over 50kph rule but I'm sure people cause more accidents from driving without proper tires.

I heard that some places in cottage country got 50cm of snow yesterday and its still falling. Oh the fun of those west winds off the lake.

Driveway is still snowy, but it will be warmer this weekend. My wife clears it during the day, gives the kids some snow time. :)

Yeah, Huntsville (Muskoka) is in a "Snow emergency".  And unlike those Ottawans who whine with only 20 cms, these guys know how to handle the deep stuff, so when they've got a snow emergency, it's the real deal.

Yeah, but I guess the autobody shops wouldn't want mandatory winter tires, it may drop the winter collisions and hurt their bottom line a bit.

Probably not.  Some people will develop a false sense of security with winter tires and push the limits.  They'll eventually end up in the body shop.   :)
