2009 BMW 328i Demo Deal
« on: December 06, 2009, 10:27:24 am »
I am looking for a 2009 BMW 328i and the dealer recommended me to buy a demo car, with premium/executive packages. No PDI, $5000 discount. But it has 13,000 KM on it. The car was used by BMW Canada headquarters. I was told that I have to sign the offer before they can get the car through their internal auction. When I asked for the CarProof document, they said I have to sign the offer first  since CarProof is not free.  I am not quite comfortable with this purchase. So I need your advise.

The car will be sold as a new car. But definitely this is a used car, and I don't know how the car was used. The dealer said they will fix any cosmetic issues and the car will be like new.

Do you think this is a good deal? I know all the 2009 new BMW have $2500 discount. So should I ask for another $2500 on top of $5000 discount?

Any advise will be truly appreciated!

Ask for the VIN and run carproof yourself? I highly doubt they'd try to sell you a car that had been in an accident as a new car....too much risk for them.

The price reduction is okay but nothing spectacular IMHO. Especially given that you can't see it, can't pick options etc. and the warranty clock already started.
Everything in life is relative.

Thanks for your advice. I will get the VIN and check myself. Also I will check with them when the warranty started. If I have to lose a year's warranty, I may have to ask for extended warranty.

If it's an auto then I don't think there is much concern about previous drivers mashing the gears up.

Have the oil changed as soon as you get it even if the Bimmer ppl say it isn't scheduled .... it will need it!

As for price, only you can determine if it's worth it.  If you think your going to keep it long term, and put reasonably low miles on it, and are the type that fusses about the condition of cars, then buy NEW.  If on the other hand you will be driving this unit 60k km and then buying again then who cares whose driven it prior.  I drive new vehicles for approx 6 months and beat them good so prior usage is always an open question.  Consequently, the discount needs to be a good one.

If the dealership is considering it a new car, ensure they start the warranty at the mileage upon delivery.  Thus, the 4-year / 80,000 km maintenance and bumper-to-bumper should actually go to 93,000 kms instead.  If they have a problem with this, I'd press hard on an existing 2009 328i that you can find online.

Given that you're in Burlington, I assume it's Budds' you're dealing with.  They're a great dealership and I'm sure the car they'd provide you will be top notch.  However, they're not necessarily going to give you the best deal and if the car you want isn't available, or isn't available with the discount you'd like, try a few other dealerships.  BMW Waterloo (where I've gotten both my BMWs) is tied in to a couple of Toronto area dealerships -- so their inventory is quite sizeable.

Best of luck -- you've made a great choice!

Thanks everybody for your informative replies. I was looking for a brand new 2009 328i auto, but was told by a few dealers that all sold out across Ontario. That's where the whole story came from. Thanks again.

I wonder why it wouldn't be sold as a Certified Pre-Owned if it was used by BMW Canada headquarters - you would get 2 additional years of CPO warranty (after the 4-year / 80,000 km warranty expires).

You might also want to check out BMW's online inventory of CPO 2009 328i cars.  At the moment there's one 328i and three 328i xDrive's listed at BMW Toronto with prices between $38-42K and between 20,000-30,000 km.  I'm sure these prices are negotiable.

Ya...well...my experiences with Budds BMW/Mini have been pretty bad...to give you another opinion besides Giant D's.

They'll tell you there are no others out there because it's in their best interest.

Are you sure it doesn't show up as one owner already, so that when you try to sell it it will show to your buyer as a 2 owner car?

I would be wary, there are better deals to be had IMHO. It's not a lot of discount for the depreciation.

The situation you described doesn't feel right to me...

Anyways, don't feel pressured to get an 09.  They'll be trying to get rid of the '10s soon - trust me - it's because the model year 2011 will start early for the 3 series next year.  Production of 2011 3 series will begin March 2011.

I agree. Any deal where the salesperson won't tell you something unless you sign sounds wrong to me.

Agree with GD.  BMW Waterloo is good.  One of the other dealerships they own is BMW Toronto (the 3rd one escapes me now...)  Anyways, they have 60% of the 3-series allocations for the coupe (not sure about sedan, but I'm guessing it should be similar).

No kidding? And the 2011 is going to be an all-new model, is it not?

It's interesting you mention this, becasue a couple of weeks ago I was told by a BMW dealer that if I didn't get my order in right away for a new 328i Touring, it would be "too late" to get a 2010. I just dismissed it as a sales tactic, but it sounds like there's some truth to it.

Yup, for cars that are ordered, you need to order by around Dec. 18.  (My dealer said Dec. 20, but BMW forums say Dec. 18).  I think it also depends on how many of the allotments have been used up before the end of Feb. 2010 production in Germany.  So your dealer would probably be best bet for exact timing.

The sedan was refreshed in MY 2009 (and it was a great refresh IMO).  The coupe will be refreshed for MY 2011 (I don't like the spyshots, which is why I got one now, but the changes are quite minor).  All 3-series will change model years starting from (build date March 2010) though.

SiRCivic, sorry, I just realized you're inquiring about the Touring model, not sedan.

The Touring model was updated along with the sedan in 2009.  A great update.  So there should be no more styling changes.  Maybe some packaging changes?? (more stuff as standard? with or without pricing changes?) Not sure.
