any folks buy from tirerack.com?
« on: December 05, 2009, 10:31:30 am »
Snows for our CX-9 are about $280 each (20", $1288 for a set less installation) from every place I've checked so far.  With the relatively good exchange rate and shipping, a set of Blizzak DM-V1 from tirerack.com would be about $780.

Anybody order tires from tirerack.com?  any problems?

I have ordered snows from there. Delivery was very quick. If you ship to a border town you avoid the brokerage fee and pay less for shipping. Even with those fees my purchase was much cheaper than in Canada.

I ordered tires for my Honda CR-V from Tire Rack. They weren't even upper end tires and I still managed to save quite a bit after having them installed and balanced locally.

I had them shipped to The UPS Store in NY state and picked them up while I had other orders waiting for me there.

Initially, the Tire Rack didn't want to ship to an address other than my billing address on my charge card. That was easily solved by adding an shipping address that I placed on file with my credit card company.

Note that there is duty on non US made tires. Maybe that has changed now.

No problems, no issues.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

thanks for the info.  I'm guessing I'd have to pay GST/PST duty on them but even with that, I'll still save a few hundred bucks.

I've bought 3 sets of tires and one set of wheels from them in recent years. No problems and fast service. I usually have the tires shipped to a package receiver in a border town about 100kms from here. For what it's worth.... I've never been charged duty when bringing tires across as a casual import regardless of their country of origin....just HST on the $ value. Most recently we saved about $600 on a winter tire and alloy wheel package for the new MINI vs the dealer.

I regretted not buying the Blizzak DMZ-3's from TireRack.  Tiretrends were marginally cheaper until I actually placed the order with them, and found the price had increased quite a bit a few days before I ordered.  So check the prices the day you order from any of these places.

I also appreciate Tirerack's extensive information and ratings of the tires.  Where else are weights and tread depths offered for all tire sizes?

Apparently not, I tried the calculator on 1010tires and there weren't any 19 or 18" that were within the recommended tolerance.  They recommend not straying more than 2 inches from your original rim diameter.

I need to get snows for the Mustang too, although I'd rather store it for the winter so altogether we'll save almost $800 in total for both sets.

What model CX-9? Most can use 18" or 17" for winter.

AWD GT.   We do want to get a 2nd set of rims, but since I have to get another set for my car we probably would wait until next year to get rims and just mount the snows on our existing rims.

Just got a set of Continental ExtremeWintercontact and alloy wheels for the GTI.
Ordered on a Sat, received on the Wed after. The package came with all the hardware you would need.

For the same price (including all duty and S/H), I could only manage to get steelies from any Canadian vendors.

And don't forget the included Hunter Road Force balancing :)

^^Yup!!  I ordered mine on Wed, they were in Thurs.  They ship to "preferred" installers in the USA, so I just went to the preferred installer and had them put on there.  I like to support CDN businesses as much as possible...but the savings are too much to pass up.

Did the customs ask any questions about your summer wheels?

Negative.  My summer tires were shot, so I just put the winters on those steel wheels.  I'll put my new summers on my "winter" steelies.  Does that make sense?

I did buy a new aluminum floor jack and about $25 worth of Tassimo coffee, and they let me through without paying anything.

I guess it's the way to go. I ordered a set of alloys + winters for my dad and shipping alone is about $250, then there is duty, brokerage and so on, so Id better be happy with what they'll get me. Ordered from TR.

That seems like alot.  I've ordered from them before shipped to my house and shipping was never that much.
