hi everybody...winter tires on the ACURA
« on: December 04, 2009, 10:29:38 am »
well actually i'm not posting a "what to buy".. i'm posting a "what I got".

My car: 2008 Acura TL Navi Base

so stock tires are Michelin MX4 235/45/17.  they are TERRIBLE in snow/ice.  And i'm sure
alot of other Acura/Honda owners will concur!  The MX4 series are also found on the TSX.

Anyways, I decided to invest in a 2nd set of wheels/tires for winter and after alot of
shopping around, I settled for a set of General Altimax Arctics.

The size i went with is 205/16/60 on black steelies (purchased from CDN TIRE).  They bolted
on with no issues at all and ride quite well.  relatively quiet as well on dry pavement and can
definitely feel the grip at times.  Although I do not push them hard at all.

Anyways, we have yet to get snow here in Vancouver but i'm 'itchin' to try them out!

If anyone has actually had the generals out in the snow, pls post on how they performed.

Those should work fine as long as there is lots of snow. Actually a bit of overkill for Vancouver winters. Most customers in Vancouver would go with a performance winter as they don't need the deep snow traction. The performance winter tires will normally be better on the dry and wet pavement and ice.

i've narrowed my selection down to continental extremewinter contact and the altimax arctic for my acura tsx.
my concern with the altimax arctic is that steering and braking at higher speeds on the highway in dry or plowed conditions would be sketchy compared to a performance winter tire?

any impressions of the altimax so far in terms of highway performance?

Exactly, you are bang on with that. If you want performance and handling to be similar to what you have now, stay with a performance winter tire.
