What size tire can I subsitute for a 185/60 r14?
« on: November 30, 2009, 08:00:50 pm »
I am having a really hard time finding tires for my Suzuki swift. Most places are out of my size, or only have tires that cost waaaaay out of my price range. Could I get away with a 175/60? Or a 185/65 even? I am clueless when it comes to tires. Thanks!

Are you looking at winters or three seasons?

175/65R14 is 0.95% larger than stock...okay since max of 3% is permitted

185/65R14 is 3.20% larger...too big

175/60R14 is 2.08% smaller...okay (I still prefer 175/65R14)

Thanks so much for the reply Dave! Now this might sound like a dumb question, but if I went with a 175/65 could I use my current rims, or do I have to get new ones for this size?

Yes, you can use the same rims. If these are winters and you are planning to own your vehicle for several more years, it may make sense to buy a second set of rims/wheels. If you are switching tires on the same rims, you have to pay for balancing during each switchover. Over time, the bead gets worn too. To save on costs, you can check with your local autowrecker/recycler for the same rims....just make sure that the rims are straight, not bent.
