400,000 km and still going
« on: November 26, 2009, 07:52:50 pm »
Well just under 5 years and the toyota solara hit 400000 kilometers. The question is how high will it go?? Used daily for business and its last tank of fuel achieved 36mpg.

Well done!

It's always been my dream to put half a million klicks on a vehicle, but at the rate I drive now, I'd have to hang onto the thing for thirty years.   :-\

Great acomplishment. How has it been problem wise? That's really getting your money's worth.

That's a lot of driving in under 5 years.   What kind of maintenance to get to 400K?

well maintenance wise its just the basics...oil change every 8000km and regular maintenance as scheduled. In the last two months however it has been costing a few readies...new quick struts on front right and left...new rotors, calipers and pads...A new A/C condensor in June.....other than that those have been the major repairs. However i am getting bored of it and need a bigger vehicle for business...any suggestions? ( that opens a can of worms...lol)

Bigger for?  More people?  To carry stuff?  What's your business?

I heard the Audi RS6 Avant is good for carrying things ;)
A subwoofer should only be noticed once it has been turned off.

My job consists of travelling over manitoba, Saskatchewan and NW ontario.  A bigger vehicle needed to carry samples, marketing materials etc.... 400,000 km has not been kind to the front end of the car. Lots of chips etc..I have had 3 windshields in this time as well. I more than likely will wait a while longer before deciding to purchase a new vehicle. This is my personal vehicle as well so I want to drive something I like, not just to have for the job.

That RS6 is making more sense.  Upkeep might be a bit much though.

I'd really want something AWD if you're doing that much driving all year round in those areas.  If I had to live in a car that much it would have to have a nice interior, comfy seats and a great stereo.

Nice to see that number. I am hoping to do that as well. Currently at 82,000km only in 3 years. :D

Depends on what sort of car you are looking for  :)

It looks like an AWD vehicle is a good idea for unpredictable road conditions in Praire. may I suggest Subaru Outback? H4 with CVT results in 24 mpg with tons of room to boot.

If AWD is not important, perhaps a diesel car would make much sense with your big mileage. The new Golf wagon/hatch is lovely, so is A3 TDI.

Unless you want an econobox like Corolla....

So shortly after posting someone made an offer to purchase at my asking price. Sale was easy and car passed safety no problems. This However put me a bind as I needed a vehicle for work. Long Story short.....2010 Equinox...not jumping over the moon over it but at the end of the day it is a work vehicle.

The question is how high will it go??

Much higher....its a Toyota!

A co-worker's Camry had 540,000 km before it was written off by an alert driver.

The engine and manual transmission had never been opened up, nor had the car seen a shop for regular maintenance because he performed it all himself. Also, it ran on nothing but regular oil.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

Impressive. Don't underestimate "regular" oil these days.  Getting hard to justify using synthetics in any normally aspirated car that just sees regular use.

Especially since these days synthetic oil for the most part isn't actually synthetic, (synthetic is a marketing term not pertaining to ingredients) there may not be much of a difference.  ;D

A co-worker runs synthetic and goes over 20,000 kms before changing it. The petroleum lab on the next floor says it is still good to go.

What we need is a someone to run dino oil for over 20,000 kms at a time. Any takers? I wonder what numbers it would show.

The owner of the high mileage Camry that ran on regular oil, changed it often.
