Planes are fly by wire, do not here of problems with them

Just a tiny difference in the amount of money and quality of equipment between aircraft systems and car systems and a LOT of difference in the skill & training  levels of the drivers.

There is no reason why car drive by wire systems could not be made, in fact M-B has done so, I saw a demo on the TV. ( side stick controller for steering throttle and braking)  But they would have to be made like aircraft systems with self diagnosis and correction capabilities. If the computer controlling your dbw steering goes wrong you'd certainly want backups built in and of course the same for dbw brakes.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Keyword: REDUNDANCY.

Definition: In engineering, redundancy is the duplication of critical components of a system with the intention of increasing reliability of the system, usually in the case of a backup or fail-safe.

Keyword: REDUNDANCY.

I worked at Ontario Hydro years ago during a work term...heard a great quote:

At hydro, everything is 3 times redundant.  At hydro, everything is 3 times redundant.  At hydro, EVERYTHING is 3 times redundant.

If it flies, floats or f#%&s...rent it.

"The auto industry has battled allegations of electronic defects in sudden-acceleration lawsuits for more than two decades, arguing that they are not caused by any vehicle defect."

Yup.  Every maker has been hit by it.  Time and time again, people blame their car.  Time and time again, they're proven wrong.  I am not one to side with large corporations, but incompetent drivers have seen a way out of accepting responsibility with this stupidity.

Floor mats, drive by wire, mysterious forces, whatever.
No place I'd rather be...

From the same article:

"For some Toyota models, reports of unintended acceleration increased more than five-fold after drive-by-wire systems were adopted, according to the review of thousands of consumer complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Toyota first installed electronic throttles in 2002 model year Lexus ES and Toyota Camry sedans. Total complaints of sudden acceleration for the Lexus and Camry in the 2002-04 model years averaged 132 a year. That's up from an average of 26 annually for the 1999-2001 models, the Times review found.

The average number of sudden acceleration complaints involving the Tacoma jumped more than 20 times, on average, in the three years after Toyota's introduction of drive-by-wire in these trucks in 2005. Increases were also found on the hybrid Prius, among other models."

Are drivers of 2005-08 Tacomas twenty times more incompetent and stupid than drivers of 2001-04 Tacomas?  ???

Since we have heard non stop how stupid these Toyota drivers appear to be because 1) they cannot remove the mat 2) put the car in neutral 3) turn off the engine, then look at GM 5% Honda 4% Nissan 2%, are we that much more intelligent?  What gives here?  I'm assuming the companies not listed have a very small percentage, dam Hyundai owners are geniuses!!
