Winter Tire less than 200

Hi Gang,

Im wondering if I can get some suggestions for some winter/snow tires.

I have P215/45R17 on my 2009 Ford Focus SES sedan.
I do mostly city driving (70-80% 0f the time) with some highway.
I live in Vancouver BC (so the tires need to be good in snow and also the rain... because it rains al the time here during winter)

My main concern is that the car is somewhat light (either that or these stock khumo tires suck lol) and may not grip very well on snow/ice so I need some snow/winter tires.

However for these tire specs these seem really expensive (usually 225-250+ ea)  Im wondering if anyone know what's good for the weather here?

You can likely downsize to the cheaper 205/55R16 size. My Mazda 5 has 17" stock but I got tires (Toyo Observe G-02 Plus, 205/60R16) and 16" steel wheels for $913 OTD at VIP Mazda in Abbotsford. The Mazda wheels may fit the 2009 Ford Focus... check around. (Mazda 3/5/6 wheels (not 15") fit the Ford Fusion and Fusion wheels fit Mazda 3/5/6), they have deals going for as low as $675 for Firestone Winterforce with wheels plus tire levy and sales taxes.

Definately go down to rims and tires at 205/55R16 - the Focus RS size and probably the most common size of tire on the planet.  Unless the brakes are different you may even be able to go down to the base model's 15" wheel and rim combo - check TireRack's site for fitment recommendations (but always buy Canadian, of course!!)

You should be able to put a steel wheel and tire package together for $700 or so.  I run Hankook W409s in that size on my car and they are awesome in wet, dry and snow/ice, and reasonably priced.  An H rated winter tire would be a little bit harder giving better dry and wet traction as well, but they are pricey.

Avoid the Canadian Tire Nordics for your driving conditions - great in snow, ice and really cold weather, but not so good on dry or wet, and in particular above freezing temps.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the extremely quick great and detailed responses.

It seems that my car takes 205/50R16 as standard equipment for a different model, but it works out that 205/55R16 is more similar to 215/45R17

So I guess I'll be looking around for tires and rims for 205/55R16

So far the cheapest rims I've found are like 60 bucks... -_-"
also... I dont see any steel rims on 1010Tires.com :p

go to costco, they have Michelin X-ice XI2 . one of the best winters out there, in 205/55/16 for $177.99. and 16" steel rims are $42.99. I got mine there.
