Problem with Winter Tires
« on: November 14, 2009, 05:52:45 pm »
About 2 weeks ago I bought 4 winter tires (on rims) from a friend of a friend of a friend... Put the winters on the car about a week later at crappy tire. The tires were also balanced (supposedly). That's where my problems start.

There's vibrations on and off from 110 to 130. Worst spot is at 120 - Murphy's Law? Also at 35 km/h I can feel the front right part of the car going up and down. WTF ???

I was told the tires and rims were bought from a dealer a year ago. They do look new.

Any ideas? I want my $80 back for starters.

Who did the balancing?

If the balancing was done by CT, I recommend that you go back to CT and tell them your issues since they had balanced and installed the tires.

If you had told CT that they were already balanced before the tires were put on the car, then there is a probable issue on the balancing. They need to be re-balanced again. The mounted tires could have been unbalanced if the tires had hit a pot hole or a curb when they were owned by the friend of a friend.

Is there dirt build-up on the rims?

It's unclear but it sounds like Canadian Ttire just mounted the tires (and rims) on your car - and nothing more.

1)  The rims could be out of round

2)  The tires could be out of round

3)  The rims might be lug centric, and not hub centric.

Find someone with a Hunter GSP9700 and have them diagnose the problem.

Also, check to see if the rims are hub centric.  Take off all the lugs nuts.  Is there a gap between the center hole and the hub?  If so, this problem is not likely to be fixed unless you get hub rings!  Finding the right size is going to be tricky as it varies with vehicle and rim manufacturer.

I experienced similar issues last year, dealership said you are using winter tires, they are like that. Then I opted for Hunter road force balancing, car's brilliant again.

Capriracer's advice is spot on.

The tires were balanced at CT when they put them on. I will probably go back sometime today and ask them to give it another try. If the vibes are still there I will kindly ask for my money back. Anyone know of an autoshop with the 9700?

Thanks for the advice.

I try to avoid CT for auto services including tire installs. Buy tires from CT and then get them installed elsewhere.

I believe the cost is around $100 for road-force balancing.

I just booked an appointment to get the road force balancing done.  I'll let you folks know how it turns out.
