Day 1:

2010 Toyota Corolla
This week I'm behind the wheel of the 2010 Toyota Corolla. According to some commercials I have been hearing on the radio, it's all-new; this isn't totally true, as it was all-new for 2009 and the 2010 model is a carry-forward with a few new features.  These include the vehicle stability control system that was previously standard only on the XRS that is now also standard on the S and LE models, and can be added to the base CE model.   Also added are two new packages that add leather and/or a sunroof, and a navigation package is available in selected trims.  More...

Why, oh WHY do all these "sporty" cars get lumbered with a spoiler?  There is absolutely no purpose to that expensive piece of plastic other than to say "Look at me;  I got sucked in by a car company".

I really want to like this car, since the latest model Civic is such a disappointment.  But I can't seem to shake the image of a "typical" Corolla driver - that tiny middle aged woman doing 70km/h in the middle lane of the QEW, gripping the steering wheel for dear life.  Could this XRS change this image burned into my brain??

Well, in this case, it could serve a function -- to keep the car planted to the road when the unintended acceleration kicks in...   Burn Out

LOL.  Grin

There is something to be said for profiling drivers of certain models.....with certain cars there tends to be a depressing predictability about the type of person who will be at the steering wheel. The Corolla will always cater for the 'A to B' crowd...nothing more, nothing less.

If one was considering the 4-cyl Camry, this can be an excellent alternative if you don't need the extra room.  You get a decent power:weight ratio, and for some, the available five speed manual is nice.  The Corolla is lots of car for the dough...

To my surprise, this loaded Corolla is only $22,350, which includes: moonroof, power windows and mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels, leather-trimmed shift knob and body-hugging front sport seats.

I do agree about the trunk spoiler though, and wish that perhaps they'd compromised with a lip spoiler and made the wing thing optional.  Too garish for me.

The worst thing about the current Corolla is the steering. WAY too light. Is it the same for the XRS?  Lips Sealed

We are all A to B crowd members unless you just keep going till you get back to A...or maybe never arrive, for one reason or another. Profiling is stupid...a decent car, for whatever attributes, is a decent car. I wonder how many SUVs were bought because, 'much more usefull', vans were labelled as soccer mommy wagons.

There is the basic difference between "auto enthusiasts" and the rest of society.

Auto enthusiasts go from A to B, but often via C (out of their way as they actually "enjoy" driving for it's own sake). Example, I added 6 kms to my 12km daily drive in/out to work so I can get the M3 on some more open roads in a rural area. The rest go from A to B via most direct route, no C, because driving is just another chore to them that they have to do to get to B. Most ppl do not understand that difference.

Additionally, Auto enthusiasts spend a lot of time reading, sourcing, talking about cars. They view their "obsession" (if you must) as a hobby, an enjoyable interest; and not as a chore. The "rest of society" views shopping for a car as a chore; the auto enthusiast loves to do it and does it often.

Some posters on here are true auto enthusiasts; others on here are not. But, the "others" are on here because they have a particular problem, need (obtain new transportation) or issue. They get an answer here, but do not become part of the enthusiast group.

Just my opinion.  Grin

EDIT - I see vdk's "just-made" post anticipated mine... Grin Grin

Anyone else remeber when 2.4 litres was a LOT of engine for a "small" car?  Or when 160 hp was the output of the "performance" v8?

I'm going to come out and say it: I'd be more apt to buy this car with a 100 hp 1.6 litre and a row-your-own transmission.  Of course, my current apt-ness to buy this is 0, as the sedan is the worst automotive form ever devised.  Give me 5 doors or give me death!

I drove this car last week, and I don't think it was too light. I was a little surprised by how heavy it was, actually. Not BMW-heavy, and no feel to speak of, but it was better than I expected in a Corolla.
