0W20 oil..hard to find!
« on: November 10, 2009, 05:51:54 pm »
The Insight takes 0W20 oil.  As I often do on my cars, I switch everything over to synthetic...engine oil, tranny, everything.  However, nobody in Windsor carries 0W20...much less 0W20 synthetic.  Ok..Honda carries 0W20.  But I want something synthetic.  I guess this means a trip to USA.  I'm just wondering...how many cars take 0W20 and has anyone seen 0W20 oil in their travels through the auto parts store??

Is there any serious difference between 0w-20 and 0w-30  which is available...

Oh I'd imagine there would be some loss of MPG since an 0W20 has a CsT of about 8.xx and 0W30 at about 11.xx

As far as protection though...I'm certain an 0W30 won't hurt a thing.

I'm surprised that Canadian Tire doesn't show it on their website. I was in a CTC store a few days ago and they had Amsoil 0w20 there but i don't see it on the website. I commented to a friend about what the Heck would use that thin an oil (now I know). Perhaps they could special order it for you, though if your near the states any way its likely a lot cheaper to get a case there.

Hmmm...I was in 2 CDN Tires today...no 0W20 of any type....

Go to any Toyota dealer. They have their own house brand of 0W20. It is very reasonably priced and has first rate specs. As well Petro Canada formulates a 0W20 grade of PCMO (synthetic). You can obtain Petro Canada oil from PC oil distribution outlets that are listed on their website. Hope this helps.

FWIW if you call Toyota they will tell you it is synthetic. The specs that Toyota Canada has released re its 0W20 indicate very strongly that it is a (quality) synthetic. The prevailing thought is that Esso does *not* formulate the 0W20 but rather it is Nippon Oil (ENEOS brand).

Anything in 0W-XX is synthetic so 0W-20 definitely is.

Not true.  As per Honda (and a couple of brands of oil) their 0W20 is NOT synthetic.  Not all 0W20 are synthetic which I thought was odd.  But I did the research..and sure enough, not all 0 weights are synthetic.  It's when you get the wider spectrum oil (0W50) that the oil is definitely synthetic.

Lots more expensive than the $4.49 per litre (case of 12) for the Toyota 0W20. I think it is the lightest oil out there.

True...but the Amsoil is good for about a year without changing it...so it ends up being about the same cost.  Amsoil is about $11 litre.

Yes. Biiiiiiiig difference. The two commonly available 0w-30s available in Canada (German Castrol and Esso XD-3) are very thick 30 weights at operating temperature. They are almost 40 weights. Their claim to fame is this operating thickness while retaining cold weather pumpability at startup.

There is no way I would run them in an engine spec'd for 0W-20.

Now you know. ;D

So what would you expect to happen if a normal car engine, not a pure race engine, was  specced as 0w-20 and was run on 0w-30 or 5w-20 or any of the synthetic oils of good quality in those viscosity ranges.   I'd expect tiny and insignificant differences in fuel consumption.  An engine with the BMW VANOS type  oil driven variable camshaft timing might be affected if the oil was too thick and was not changed often enough but even that can live with 5w-30, 0w-30, 0w-40... provide that the oil and filter are changed regularly.

Good question. I would expect a drop in MPG for sure. Not being an engine designer myself I assume that the move to 0W-20 oils was more for fuel economy reasons than anything else. That being said, if a new engine is designed for a specific viscosity oil (0W-20) then it would be foolish to use otherwise unless you had a good reason. If (and a big if as I have no evidence or examples) the engine is designed for thinner oil (ie. smaller oil journals etc) then parts of the engine may be affected by a thicker oil. I think the fuel economy difference between the 0W-30 (almost 40 weight ) and the much thinner 20 weight wouldn't be slight but more in whole percentages? 5%?

Not that I am going to try. ;D

Right!   I run the Fit engine on Honda 5w-20, it burns none at all between changes which are once a year.
I run the GTI on the VW50x spec for that engine with a bottle of Mobil 1 0w-40 which meets the same VW 50x spec for the occasional top ups... that engine burns maybe 200 ml between the 8000 km changes.

21Rouge is correct both the Honda and Toyota 0W-20 brand oils are synthetic (all 0W-XX oils are).
These oils are believed to be PAO/GP III blends.
They are both made at the Idemitsu manufacturing in Jacksonville Indiana.
They are both high Moly oils and have industry leading viscosity index's  over 200 ( Honda is 203 and Toyota is an amazing 214).
These are the lightest oils you can buy (based on 40C vis and VI) and have 100C vis of 8.7 cSt and 8.8 cSt respectively.
The products cost twice in the States what they do in Canada but I don't know for how long that will last.

The two oils have been reviewed on BITOG and have VOA posted for those that would like to review them.
