I have a front driver, an '08 Mazda 3 Sport (currently getting its front bumper replaced courtesy of Canada Post), and for a big city, they work. The cube fits into that class of vehicle that can sell like stink in the Far East or Europe, but just won't fly here.
That is usually because the design is too far out of the mainstream, or because the original idea has been mutated to fit what somebody thinks 'North America' wants in a car. (ie Ford still hasn't delivered a GenII Focus, only a warmed over GenI).
All I am saying is that in the world of weird cars - to which I think the cube belongs - it may be too weird for the more conservative tastes over here. |

Scion has a cube which is ok to look at...but what can you do with a cube and be a bit different. This one looks a bit like a Moore sculpture. |

Not macho enough for North American tastes.
Or is that too cutesy?
Whatever, it just doesn't gel with the male image.
That about cover it? |

They really aren't a fan of this in Europe, either http://fliiby.com/file/661122/qtnc3vmxy8.htmlRemember, Europeans like small cars, but they like small cars that are equipped like our big cars; nice interiors, climate control, power seats, windows, etc, sat nav systems, integrated phones, etc etc. Think Mercedes B Class or Audi A3 - I know they are not in the Cube's price range, but they show that Europeans will buy small but expect good quality. The Cube is not what they want - underpowered, quirky and cheap feeling interiors are not European car "wants" generally. Nor are they North American car "wants". It may work well in Japan, but give me a Kia Soul, Honda Element, Scion Xb, or even a Mazda 3 / 5 any day over this one. |

The thing about the Cube is that it looks quirky and fun on the outside, but you get inside and drive it and you realize... it's really no better than, say, a Versa. The interior is a bit depressing and the whole thing just feels rough around the edges.
The Kia Soul would get my vote over this, I think. |

Canada Stig: You watch too much Top Gear - you're describing what Jeremy wants. Europeans generally do not care about power - well they do - but not at the expense of economy - this why everything in Europe is offered with a diesel engine. It just makes sense as gas is much more expensive over there. You are right on though with your interior comments. I think the biggest problem with this vehicle will be the fuel mileage. Everyone thought that the Element would be a huge seller because it was a boxy shape which meant you could put a lot of stuff in it AND it was a 4cyl which people thought would be great on fuel. Sadly a brick is not a very good aerodynamic shape and fuel mileage tanks when you get these boxy vehicles on the highway. So for a lot of city folk they're commuting several kms on freeways where a Mazda 3 or Versa or Matrix, etc. will get much better mileage. That and well lets be honest - its fugly. Some pretty entertaining posts on this one too! Glad to see this hasn't turned into the usual flame-war! |

I agree with Canada Stig, the small cars in Europe are normally better equipped. Spec5 you're getting mixed up between power and power/weight. Europeans do care about power, but prefer less power and less weight which automatically equals more economy. James I love the way you are being honest about trying to like this car, I would be the same. But this is quite a stretch: Visibility is great during the day, and when it isn’t raining... |

Just looked up the EPA numbers for the Cube... ouch!
9.8L/100km city, 8.1L/100km highway for the 6-speed
8.4L/100km city, 7.8L/100km highway for the CVT
The CVT numbers are almost on par with the Honda Civic automatic--a significantly larger and heavier vehicle. The Fit automatic absolutely whips it with 8.4/6.7 L/100km city/highway (granted, it does look like a handheld vacuum). Still, I would have expected better numbers for a car of this size with a CVT.
I guess the uprightness does take its toll on fuel economy; especially on the highway. |

That's some poor fuel mileage. Understanding that the engine is likely still a little tight, and whatnot, my Protege5, with a 2.0, 5 speed, and 177,000kms is knocking back 7.1 right now.

^ You cannot compare your mileage with mine. 7.8 is actually pretty good for my driving routes, very few cars I have tested have done better. I averaged 8.5 with the soul for those that wonder. |

Which one has the better FTD number? I'm thinking the Cube would be the loser over the Soul. |

That's what I was thinking too, they'd both probably be pretty slow. |

Fun to drive? A friend of mine uses the Vrtucar service in Ottawa and they recently added a cube. I'm not sure why everyone is harping on the interior. I thought it was more than acceptable. |

Fun to drive? Sorry I thought that was a common term - but yes - I'm thinking the Soul would have been more fun to drive! |

Not sure, the cube is pretty fun to drive, I'd have to drive them back to back. Chris Chase did at TestFest perhaps he can comment? |
