Utah Raises Speed Limit to 80 in Some Areas
« on: October 28, 2009, 03:04:50 pm »
Utah raised the speed limit on parts of I 15 and found that the 85th percentile speed pretty well stayed the same.  This is what I would have expected as most people would drive at a speed they feel comfortable at.

This is why there is so much speeding on the 401 as it was designed for a speed higher than the posted limit.  I have developed a lot of subdivisions and we always fought with the City to make sure that the road design did not encourage speeding.  We used curves, fought for narrower roads and roundabouts to accomplish this.

Perhaps the Ontario MOT should review the speed limits on the open areas of the 401.

I agree - it should come as no surprise that people drive at a speed they feel is safe and reasonable. Arguments that people will drive at even higher speeds should the speed limit increase ignore human psychology. When I drove to Kingston this past summer I did 75-80 MPH pretty regularly and it was no big deal, and having driven the 401, the same sorts of speed on many portions thereof seem perfectly reasonable.

Off topic but...

In my opinion, the curves do not reduce speeds in subdivisions.  They do, however, introduce blind spots for pedestrians crossing the street and vehicles exiting driveways.  Odd shaped lots are also a result.   ;D

I think Utah is just being sensible with the increased limit. Pretty much all of Utah, excluding the Salt Lake City corridor, is open space driving; and no doubt, most drivers will go the pace they feel comfortable at. Especially on I15.

As to curves, bring 'em on....!!!!  ;)

Utah is one of my favorite states and I have driven there many times. Its interesting with how far it can be between cities but people still drive at their comfort speed (as noted in the article). I also noticed the same thing in neighboring states with similar speed limits. Also with a state population of only 2.5M there is a lot of open areas with low traffic volume. Very relaxing and some beautiful areas.

On a funny note, one time while crossing the state I set the cruise to 160kph (100mph) and got passed by only one vehicle, Ford Exploder. I probably passed less than 50 cars during that tank of gas.

If memory serves me correct, when I was in Arizona this past summer the speed limit in certain areas was 80 or 85, cant remember, either way, it was a perfect speed, I never felt the need to speed, nor did I even feel the need to jump in to the left lane...I'd love to see that being applied to certain portions of the 400 series highways, I cant see why they couldn't handle those speeds.

should be 85 or 90 here... at least on 400 Who doesn't drive 125-130 on the 400. If I do 120, at least a third are passing me...

nothing dangerous about 130 km/h

407 should be 140 -- that thing is EMPTY!  They could reduce it to 100 or 110 in the core part.

In NB, the 4 lane highways are officially 110, with an accepted speed of 125.

135 is nice, but you're taking your chances.

I have no issues with that system.

It wouldn't surprise me if there was a serious crackdown on speeding in the future on the freeways in Ontario.  The province has a $25b deficit and this might be a good opportunity for McGuinty and Fantino to rev up the cash machine and bring in some much needed dollars.

It doesn't matter if it makes sense.

That sh*t been happening in rural Ontario for the past 10 years where the counties get the majority of the fines.

Ontario has got to be one of the most restrictive jurisdictions to drive in North America.  Where did all go wrong.

Artic, Ontario has been an anal retentive place since forever.  Not just speed limits.  Booze for instance. I remember when you could not carry your own drink to another table.  Having a quiet glass in a provincial park is still frowned on.  Film censorship is another one.
In fact the only reason to live here is that , in my time, it has been where the jobs have been.... and the taxes have been lower than Montreal.

407 should be 140 -- that thing is EMPTY!  They could reduce it to 100 or 110 in the core part.

the original plan was that the 407 should have a higher limit as it was tolled...just like the French Autoroutes but the OPP said that it would not be safe  so Bob Rae's gov canned that idea.

I'm curious about this one. What is wrong with the film censorship in Ontario?

I've actually been there twice when they are reviewing films and thought it was well done.

Pre Censorship is always wrong.  I am sure that the film review board take their responsibilities very seriously, nowadays anyway.
Note that I have no problem with post censorship. I.e the police being asked to  bring an action against a film/book whatever if it offends a federal law.    Let the public see/read whatever it is and let the courts/people decide what is wrong or right.

Where do you people drive on the 401
Usually in my truck I travel at 105km/hr, most trips are about 75 km to the job sites
If I travel at 120km/hr I save maybe 3 minutes ::), and use a more gas
Also I am passing people at 105

Have to agree. I was on the 401 this summer while on holidays. Never saw anybody doing excessive speeds. MOST were at the speed limit. Same as the QE2 between Edmonton and Calgary. I drive that highway at least once a month. The odd car/truck may pass me as I go 120km/h. But for the most part,I'm passing most people how are doing the limit.
Enjoying the Alberta advantage
