Sure the Rav 4 with the 4 banger is a no brainer, but again it's all about the money.

I should be looking at a Rav 4 then?

A good vehicle - maybe a 2007

Resale prices are very high.  What is your price range?

more concerned about getting into a reliable vehicle and something safe for the wife and kids - and something not GM/Chrysler.  Getting tired of being burned.  But I guess buying import doesnt guarantee good life either as they break too.

Ideally the price range is sub $11,000 but obviously not going to get much for this.

Vibe/Matrix would be a stretch with a 2yr old with another 2 years to go with car seats and a stroller the odd time.

Had a look at kijiji/autotrader to see what I would have to cough up for a latest version of the Rav4/CRV- there are some private sales of '07 Rav4's and CRVs in the $21,000 to $22,500 range with anywhere from 40,000km to 92,500km.

Could maybe get into a '06 Sonata with the 3.3 in the $12,500 range but not sure if exactly good family vehicle.

Seems like alot of old version Kia sedonas for cheap.

And again back to the '07 SV6 with the 3.9 in the $11,000 range.

Have you had a look at Sienna's and Odyssey's? They can be quite reasonable used.

Is your family opposed to station wagons?  Subaru Outbacks/Legacy wagons are fairly roomy and are pretty reliable...along with AWD.

Thats the problem with the RAV.  PPL want too much for their used units.  You might want to check out a 2005 4 banger 2.3 Ford Escape or Mazda Tribute.  Avoid the 6 banger.

A Grand Caravan would likely be a more useful replacement than a Ford Escape/Tribute.  And the ~2003+ vans aren't that bad overall.

Always thought the devil you know is better than the devil you dont.  That is why I stuck with a montana last time around vs the caravan.

Not sure if dumping my money into a 06-07 Grand Caravan is that much better than into a GM product especially given that the 3.9 is in the 07 models.  Dont think I want a newer restyled Grand Caravan when I can get into a Entourage or Sedona for the same price point.

Didnt think the rav4 prices were too bad given that a similar Santa Fe (07 with similar milage) is going for around $19,000. (only about $3,000 more for a toyota rav4)

The V6 Sonata (06 or 07) still looks like the best used car deal.  Large car for a family.  Large trunk.  And can be had for $12,000 to $13,000 range.  The V6 in them are nice engines that match the size of the vehicle with smooth power that should last a long time.

Can I drive my van around with the rad cap off?

With the head leaking into the coolant if I leave the cap on it overpressurizes the system and pushes all the coolant into the overflow reservoir.

Do you think I could run it for a little with the rad cap off?

I somehow think that cure is worse than the disease.

Use it as a trade.  You might get $500.

The van is 200km from the CT that fixed it.

If he makes any concessions (ie will put a motor in it for example) I was wondering if I could drive it 200km one way to the garage with the rad cap off

Do you think it would get me there or not?

What happens if you drive around with your rad cap off?

The coolant will boil and, propelled by steam, go everywhere in the engine compartment.  The hot spots in the cylinder head(s) will have only steam not liquid to carry heat away and will over heat. The water pump will end up just sloshing the remaining coolant around in the bloack and not circulating it.

IMO the ONLY time to run with no rad cap is running the engine for a while after replacing the coolant to " burp" the coolant passages and get any air out of the system and I am not sure that should be done with modern mixed mateal engines ( alloy head  and iron block).

Like TPL said, there is no running that car on the road without the rad cap.

Did you get your original repair money back?    Consider that a victory.

You've got to move on from this vehicle.  This is your best bet.  Buy a bottle of IRONTITE for head gasket leaks.  Get rid of all the visible murky stuff.  Use some of the cheap green antifreeze.  Add the Irontite.  Drive immediately to a GM dealer and buy something for 0%.  Stick that POS back to whom it came from.  Smiley
