I will look into the VW Passat Wagon, thanks. Though my neighbour has a 2003 VW Jetta and hates it, has had no end of troubles with it. Makes me a little wary. ;)

Why I don't like the Matrix:
-no rear visibility
-ours has a VERY touchy clutch, I don't like it at all
-don't much care for the styling

Subaru's are proving difficult to find/expensive out here. In fact, wagons period are proving difficult to find... :P

Not an entirely bad idea.  The first Gen CR-V's are within your price range and have proven to be quite reliable.

The protege5 is also a safe bet.  They have some rusting issues, but are otherwise pretty solid.  I'm at 190k km and it's still running very strong.  You won't find a car that's as fun to drive with the same practicality, economy and price.

Honda CR-V's are pretty much one of the most reliable sets of wheels put on the road, but resale values tend to be pretty high.

I have expanded my search to include SUV's. Any thoughts on a 2001-2003 Hyundai Santa Fe?

I'd endorse this idea. I own a 2001 Esteem wagon, and it is roomy for its size, very cheap to run and maintain, and extremely reliable. I've never had a major repair. After eight winters on salt-saturated Ontario roads, mine is showing some rust. I don't imagine that would be much of a concern in a B.C. car.

I agree. I love mine, a 2004, which I bought after getting rid of a 2003 Matrix after 11 months of driving. The drive is a bit 'light headed' and takes a bit of getting used to. Blame a high seating position and a powerful 155hp engine. Great visibility. Better radio than a Matrix. Very reliable, except perhaps for wheel bearings (I've replaced both front bearings).

Even with a 2.4 litre engine, I haven't noticed any difference in mileage with that of the Matrix. Nothing scientific, just a feeling. Maybe it's because I'm not doing a lot of hills or start and stop...

Just put the steering wheel in the DOWN position and the drive feels much better - watz up with that??

97-2000 Escort wagon - reliable but a bit dull. But cheap and reliable.
