I just try to be not contactable when in the car.  Doesn't work all the time but I only make/take high priority calls.

I agree... and you're right, not always possible.

In response to TPL's query from a month ago, it's not so much a desire to take the all-important call at any time as a demand from clients now-a-days.  There is an expectation that cells (and blackberries) make us available anywhere, anytime, 24-7.  If I'm not able to receive a call, I might lose business.

Understood.  But every one of Import Queen's calls fall into the high priority.

I completely understand that if ones job where the "office time" involves being in the car driving between  customer sites/meetings that a BB or similar and being able to answer/make calls at 120 km/h is necessary.
Although I worked for a consultancy it was not necessary for me to be available outside my work hours of about 07:45 to 16:45. My group did have  major customer in the UK but I was never involved in support.
However, in years past long before cell phones I have spent my share of evenings, nights and even one Xmas day supporting customers by phone and slow speed modem!
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Speakerphone/headsets are like Condoms and kids.

You tell them not to have sex (make/take calls) as its not safe. You know darn well they are going to do it anyways. So if its going to nhappen anyways might as well provide equpiment when they are doing what they should not be.

Call absitence doesn't work in most cases. If it was only personal phone use a case can be made but it only takes one chewing out by a boss for not answering a question in a timley fashion to make people risk using a handhels "just for one quick call".

Agreed.  Personally I wouldn't put business calls into my high priority, but then I have an understanding boss.  If it was my own business like Jeff's then every call would be high priority.

Funny thing is I still see people calling by hand, texting and e-mailing in their cars every day, I wonder when the culture change will kick in...

Perhaps when more people watch Crystal's profile from the current Canada's Worst Driver edition.  She is a driving, talking, texting nightmare.
