I get a warm and fuzzy feeling when I hear of someone like yourself who is obviously an enthusiast finally getting an opportunity to obtain one of your dream cars.

An enthusiast? More like sick. LOL

I got a little over zealous with the garden hose and noticed some water droplets in one of the taillight compartments the day after. I couldn't have that, so off came the center taillight panel (you first have to remove both sides) and got the paper towels and hair dryer out.

Well that lead to washing the backs of the taillights and the recess in the painted plastic bumper panel where the taillights mount, finishing that area with Meguiar's Swirl Remover polish and Meguiar's Yellow 26 wax.

See what I mean. I will be seeing a shrink on Monday. I hope he calls it a passion.



I refuse to believe you are sick because it means that I am also in need of medical attention. Call a shrink when you find yourself cleaning out the tire treads with Q-tips.  Cheesy

Have to agree with that sentiment, there is nothing better than to see a true enthusiast end with a dream car, top notch!

The 993 is also my fave 911 too, a great car indeed.  I have to agree about the bucket list thing having an effect on you, I was in the same situation.  I was umming and awwing about getting a TVR or Lotus (or being more financially sensible) when both of my friends' dads died at a relatively young age, one of them was a very sensible man who had cared well for his family, saved up for retirement and never really done anything that extravagant.  I thought to myself, why wait, why not enjoy my dream car whilst I'm young.  It's a decision I have never regretted.

Now lets line up a Winter photo shoot!  Smiley  That car would look awesome in the snow...

I had a short bit of time behind the wheel of a 1997 911 C4S, and as far as I'm concerned, that is the ultimate 911 regardless of year.  The 993 still looked all 911 and was shockingly good without being laden with gizmos.

I still love the 87-89 911's for their overbuilt construction and relative simplicity, but the 993's are SO good.

One question though:  was all the matting removed from the 'trunk' in those pics to show how clean it is?

Its what I do to any used car that I buy; go over it in detail and turn it into a new one.

I removed the carpet to give it a light vacuuming as that is all it needed.

It also gives you a chance to get to know your vehicle.

I removed the battery, cleaned it, topped it up with distilled water and charged it while monitoring the voltage to see what state it is in. I also put a Battery Mat under it.

I also removed the double sided tape that was holding the Xenon modules (at least one of them; the other had become unstuck) to the car and used 3M Dual Lock instead.

I also noticed that all the rubber drain plugs but one was missing in the floor of the spare wheel well (thats why you see short strips of closed cell foam in the pic - will order them).

That black plastic cover next to the battery covers the ABS. Both plastic push-on nuts/caps were broken.

The luggage compartment light wasn't working; someone had disconnected /unplugged the connector and taped it over. Who knows why.

So I'm just taking care of very minor details to get the car the way I like them.

Congrats on the dream car!  I'm lucky that I've already had one of my dream cars pretty early on.  I'm working on dream car #2 as we speak!

Absolutely!

You know, when you spend more than the usual amount of $$$ on a used car, you sometimes have doubts as to what you are getting into or what you might end up with, especially in a 14 year-old car.

If I were smarter (and had more time), I would have had the vehicle mechanically checked (compression or leak-down test, etc), but it was located hours away and I gave it a good going over for two and one-half hours on top of two test drives over two weekends. It drove well, it went through the gears up and down well and steered straight even under braking, etc.

And when I started detailing it, the more I got into it, the more I liked what I saw.

No regrets! I'd do it again tomorrow and every day thereafter.  Smiley

A few weeks back, we went and looked at a 2002 911 Carerra 4.  It had every option...Aero package, 6 speed, Xenons, 18" wheels, Technology package, etc...It looked fantastic, all records up to date, relatively low miles.  Fairly cheap too.  911s seem to be fairly cheap (in the US) even will all maintenance.  Why is this?  Are people terrified of future maintenance on these?  The car was mint...but I didn't pull the trigger.  I showed the pics and info about the car to Sir Osis...and he was also a little stumped as to why you can get these cars fairly cheap....

The price of silver used 996's in the UK has plummeted, too many about, common colour and the least favourite model.  People were getting offered ridiculously low prices by dealers when they were trying to trade in.  Plus factor in the economic conditions and the fact that future bills on some of these cars are very expensive due to engine quality issues, and all that will reduce prices.

Jeff and I were talking the other day and agreed that the 993 is the best, and a 993 Turbo would just be awesome, but mega bucks!

We've seen them in the US in the mid $40s......Great car!  But ~14 liter oil changes (all synthetic) can get pricey! Smiley

I also looked at 911s for sale in the US and didn't find any to be a great deal by the time you factor in exchange, the 6.1% duty and the Porsche Canada $1250 charge for the inspection, a letter of compliance and an oil and filter change.

The one you were looking at is a 996 series and starting in 2002, they went with a 3.6 L engine compared to the 3.4 L previously used in that series. The issue with the 996 series (not the turbo or GT models) is the rear main seal and intermediate shaft bearing. So I have been told and also what I've read.

You can get very nice 996s in the low $30K range

That is what I've read in numerous reviews and even a review after the 993 was 10 years old.

Which is why I picked up 4 jugs of Mobil 1 15W-50 while I was stateside last weekend. At US$22 at Walmart in the US compared to CA$42 at Walmart here or $44 at CTC  Shocked, the savings does make a big difference. I bought 6 jugs in total; another two for my daily driver.

My 993 takes 9 liters per oil change (11.5 liters total) and 2 engine oil filters.

Rrocket, as others have stated, the 996s have dropped like a stone.  In addition to a few 'teething' issues with the engines, they were the first water-cooled generation (which P-car purists cringed over) and most agree that they're the ugliest 911 generation too.  The previous 993 generation command more money. 

Hcrv, it's owners like you that help keep more than 70% of all Porsches ever built still on the road (read that stat on the Porsche website last week).  I love the fanaticism and makes me more comfortable thinking that some day I'll buy my used Porsche from someone who cares as much as you do about the details.  Thumbs up
