My son and his partner are starting to look for a new SUV, needs it to be a standard

Want to be able to tow with it, to get building supplies, fire wood

They are Dartmouth at the moment but could be posted at any air force base in the next couple of years

There is VW tiguan, Forester, BMW X3, 3 series wagon, does MB still make a manual SUV, anything else?

By the way if it is diesel all the better.

He has had no problems with his Jetta TDI,  finds it a little light and low for towing, also his partner calls his Jetta a grandpa car LOL

Suzuki Grand Vitara JA 4WD 4cylinder tows up to 3000lbs. 4cylinder FWD Escape/Tribues tow 1500lbs. These options are the lower end given the starting list that included BMW & MB though.

I find it funny how a lot women will like a SUV and hate a wagon of the same size
without even seating in it or driving it

Well, instead of changing the car, why not change the wife?

More info would help:

How much do they want to tow?  A Forester (and I would guess some of the similar sized CUV's) can "only" tow 2,500 lbs, with a 200 lbs tongue weight.

Why only a manual?  Then they can't get the Forester Turbo   Cry

New or used?

If new I can only think of the Tiguan that's available with a stick. And even that's FWD. The X3 used to be manual and auto but not anymore. Audi and Benz are off the list too.

So they're left with one?  Huh Huh

I don't know if the other choices listed above include new models, but I do know that the 2006-2010 Grand Vitaras are available with manual transmissions.  They are available in both 2wd and 4wd in the US, 4wd only in Canada (maybe there's a 2010 2wd Canadian model).  They have a basic 4wd/awd system with the manuals.  It seems to me none of them have a manual transmission and 4wd/awd with a low range.  If you want the low range, you have to get an automatic.

Is the Patriot not available with a manual?

A used Nissan X-Trail comes to mind. I have seen a few manuals around. I test drove on before I bought the Fit and I really liked it. Great car for the money and I believe they can two 3000 lbs.

Note that if you want this feature, you could only get traction and stability control on the most expensive version of the XTrail - the LE.

I had an XTrail SE -- without traction and stability control, of course -- and never missed those features. The AWD system was the most advanced of all the small SUVs, and it handled the worst weather and gnarliest back roads with ease. I miss that vehicle.

None of those cars are going to tow any more than a wagon or many other cars.

As for the fuel economy of the xterra, it's not appreciably worse than the other cars you listed either.
