Have a 09 Rav4 with 225/65R17 all season tires.  Want to put on snows for the winter in GTA.

Can I use 215/65R17?  Are univeral 17" (5 X 114.3) rims okay to use?

Dealer wants to use steel rims from the Rav4 base model with the 225s Michelin Latitude Alpin.

Any recommendations?

I would personally stick with the factory size of 225/65R17. You won't see any benefits in changing to the 215's. Also use the universal steel wheels as a last resort. Most likely they will not be hub centric and you will probably get vibrations at higher speeds.

Any preference with tire?

Michelin Latitude Alpin or Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V1?

Tough call as both are brand new tires. Personally experience with the brands has me leaning towards the Blizzak as being a bit better overall in snow/ice traction. The Michelin will probably last a bit longer though.

As a proven leader, you might also want to check out the Toyo Open Country G-02 plus.

I doubt it. Ther website says ships in 10 business days here http://www.1010tires.com/tire.asp?tirebrand=Toyo&tiremodel=Observe+G%2D02+plus leads me to believe they don't stock them in house?

I have been very happy with Blizzak WS-60's on my Forester.  You may want to look at those too as they have a proven record.

We have WS-60's on the Corolla, and they're a very impressive tire.  I still have WS-50's on the Subaru, and the difference is quite noticeable.  I'd like to upgrade on the Scoob, but the 50's have 11/32 left, so I have to wait...

I'd go with the short list of:

WS-60
Michelin X-Ice2
Toyo G-02
Yoko iG20

To those of you who are suggesting passenger vehicle tires to someone who needs light truck/SUV tires: you are suggesting passenger vehicle tires to someone who needs light truck/SUV tires.  Grin

A RAV4 uses light truck tires exclusively?  Since when?  CUV's generally come with passenger "car" tires (CUV's are based on car chassis) and you can certainly use "car" tires on them.  Check the online retailers like tirerack and you'll see if you search by RAV4, it returns passenger car tires for recommended replacements.

Nope, it returns light truck/SUV tires for me. Geolandar not iG20, Open Country not Observe, DM-V1 not WS-60. Pirelli Winter Carving is in there though.

Interesting..........I would have pegged the RAV4 as much more of a car-based CUV than a truck.

I keep getting a mix, regardless of size.  You don't have to use a light truck tire on a RAV4.

That's what I thought as well. Doesn't the "Light Truck" designation refer to load capacity?

if yer LIGHT TRUCK really is a TRUCK......with a bed..........then maybe U will use it to Haul in greasy off road situations  then ON/OFF road designated tyres will be a decent choice (like ALL SEASONS) ..U can get OFF ROAD Small TRUCK tyres if yer just on the farm etc  90% of the time.............but for most casual small truck and CUV/SUV/Crossovr stuff............HI_WAY TYRES are fine.....but get a decent load rating

Rav4's come factory with P rated tires. Going to an LT rated tire would make for a very rough and stiff drive.

It comes in both P-Metric and LT sizes.

So...does an LT designation mean stiffer/heavier sidewalls to get a higher load rating and thus the stiffer/rougher ride?
