Best gas station
« on: September 25, 2009, 09:35:15 am »
Which of these gasoline station provides the best gasoline for your car (87 Octane), Sunoco, Petro-Canada or Esso?

I currently use Esso as it's the most convenient location for me but others are just another 1-2 minutes away.

My neighbor swears by Sunoco and so does my brother.

I know from my own experience I won't touch Shell as I got a bad tank once and my gas gauge was going all over the place.

What do you prefer and why?

Any input is appreciated.

Many in Central Canada swear by Sunoco. Our old friend, Barrie1, who knew cars was a Sunoco fan.

In BC it's Chevron.  :)

I've been using Canadian Tire gas bars for the last couple of years.  In Ontario there is a "Gas Advantage" credit card you can get that gets you up to $0.10 a liter off if you charge over $2k per month, $0.08@$1k, etc.

While many swear by Sunoco because you can usually get the highest octane around for the most part it doesn't matter.  A lot of gas  is like a commodity,  the companies all get it out of the same big tank and put in their own additives.
One rule of thumb is to never fill up when they are unloading as that stirs up all the crap and water at the bottom of the tank.

Is there one type of gas brand that's better than the other? eg. Sunoco is better than Esso

Technically, any Top Tier gasoline is better than any regular gasoline. Technically...

What about ethanol? I've heard that Shell V-Power (91) doesn't have any.

Sunoco 94 doesn't either.

I am a:
Esso 100 yds away for convenience and I have an RFID They have an RBC atm.
    Shell airmiles on the RFID
Sunoco my preference   no RFID but they do have a carwash.
person.

All three have convenience stores built in which I guess is just the new way of making profits at gas stations.

 :iagree:

The Volvo loves that high test Chevron when it visits BC. I think it is a 94 octane with no ethanol?

Most 91 octane gasolines don't contain ethanol.  You don't want to be filling your marine, sled, ATV motor, chain saw with ethanol gas if it can be avoided or a 20 year old car/motorcycle.

In the USA, land of few rules, some mid western retailers have been adding up to 18% ethanol and not disclosing it.  I'm thinking 15% might be happening up here on occasion.

If available I buy from the newest station, with the newest tanks and pumps.  I favour Sunoco and UPI.

I am mostly using Shell based on their claim of no ethanol in 91. I'm not sure whats the deal on this with other top tiers.

I had a tip from my uncle who used to operate some Turbo gas stations. Never fill up your tank at a station when a bulk fuel truck is replenshing the underground tanks. His thoughts were that the fuel being pumped into the tanks stirs up the crud at the bottom of the storage tanks. This crud in suspension is then sucked up by the retail pump intake and deposited in your cars fuel tank. Free of charge. ;D I am sure there are some screens/filters but I never saw or changed them when I was a pump jockey.

Didn't Shell lose a lawsuit brought on because the additives they claimed were 'cleaning' the fuel injectors, were actually clogging them? (And, of course, it went to court because they wouldn't admit that?)

I like Ultramar because of it's yearly no-nonsense mystery saving coupon promotion, which gave you $1 off on a 25 litre fillup. Only problem is, I don't seem to get the coupons anymore.  :-\

I'm not too impressed with ESSO's get the 'top of the line' car wash for slightly more ("same price") than the base car wash. It seems a bit sneaky.
Just put the steering wheel in the DOWN position and the drive feels much better - watz up with that??
