I only ride with a full-face helmet.  A holdover from my racing days, I have my bloodtype on it and in with my ID.  Even on warm days I have a leather jacket and boots on.  While I enjoy riding, I don't relish the idea of having no skin, or worse.  Dead seems better than mangled beyond belief.

Finally got a look at my bike yesterday:



Surprisingly little visible damage, and all on the one side. I'm guessing after pitching me off the bike continued to roll on the crash bar and the side bags, getting far enough over to rash the top of the sidecases and the topbox. It then settled back down and slid like a curling rock on the wet highway, 300 ft or so.

Who and what brought it back over the border?  Is the damage worth have a  claim?  Trust you are feeling a wee bit better.

Yep feeling somewhat better. Still get tired easy and still doing everything left handed. Will be trying work part-time Monday and (hopefully) I will be able to lose the sling enough to drive my truck the week after that.

Very surprised at the bikes condition, but we will see if there is any twist to the frame, etc. The people who stopped to help me did the hauling.

Probably the horseshoes took the full brunt of the impact!

Heard from the adjuster finally, they are writing off the bike, offering me $6600 CDN - $250 deductible. Looks like $5600 for the bike plus $1000 for the accessories, getting about 2/3 the purchase price for the bike (2005 w/32,000 km) and the farkles. Seems good to me.

Shoulder appears to be healing nicely, range of motion is almost back. Big bump on the collarbone break but it feels together, I'll see if the doc says the collarbone is mended.

Do you have the option to buy it back. Most of damage is cosmetic no?

I was going to ask my rep about that. The salvage value on the form is listed as only $600.00.

But is that what I could actually buy it for? What costs are involved to get it recertified (what do I really need to replace, what is the inspection process and cost), etc.

And, of course, do I really want a non-ABS bike? The next skid I might not get so lucky.

I wonder too about getting insurance for it and the process of certification.  Personally, I'd let it go and move on.  After I crashed my racebike, the mechanic pulled the engine out of it, and tossed the frame saying "can't trust that anymore."

That is an outstanding settlement on the $1000. of accessories.  Usually if they are not part of the original purchase price you get beat.

Now if you were an Ontarioian  :P  you'd be better off not making a claim and repairing the bike.

Got the Blue Cross statement for the two days of Montana medical care:

$5000/day for the hospital X 2 = $10,000

plus

$800 for the MRI
$500 for the doctor visits

Glad I had travel insurance. It was a nice hospital and all, but wow.

$5000/day... hmmmm I'd expect some very pretty and "obliging" nurses at that rate.  I wonder how much a fully serviced stay at a "ranch" in Nevada would cost for 2 days.
