Crikey! Glad you're OK. Two serious crashes (this and LasP) in a short space of time, not doing my dream of owning a bike one day any good...

Unfortunately, it's happened here, too. Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION Motorcyclist crashes after dodging deer By: Staff Writer 24/09/2009 8:39 AM WINNIPEG -- A 27-year-old woman escaped serious injury this morning after sliding out on her motorcycle when a deer crossed in front of her on the Trans-Canada Highway near the city limits. The accident occurred around 6 a.m. in the westbound lane. RCMP credit the proper use of a helmet for limiting the woman's injuries. She was conscious and breathing at the scene and was taken to Health Sciences Centre with non-life-threatening injuries. http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/Motorcyclist-crashes-after-dodging-deer-61098677.html |

That looks pretty much what happened to me. Here is a few helmet pictures, the Havre hospital staff were delighted I was wearing one. Many don't that I saw in Montana, Utah, and Colorado. I was indeed injured in my 'good' side, typing and mousing (plus everything else) is very awkward right now. |

Wow! Those pictures make it real. I don't want to imagine what would have happened if you weren't wearing a full-face! That's the one thing about bikes that makes me uneasy...the stuff you can't control. |

Oooucchh, that's bad, glad to know you are OK (well, not 100%, but OK). Were you wearing those jackets with plastic protections and stuff?? Hope you get well soon. Good thing is you will learn how to use more your left side, who knows if you end up being and ambidextrous after all, ehehehe. |

Yes, I had a very good riding suit, an Aerostich Roadcrafter made of cordura nylon with plastic armour backed by foam. http://www.aerostich.com/aerostich-suits/roadcrafter/roadcrafter-one-piece-suit.html Paid for it's price that day. They had a heck of a time cutting through it. Now it looks like a flattened chicken carcass. Just laboriously typed an account for ADVrider's "Face plant" section: Well I had a week off last week, and decided to do my first ever tour of the U.S. Had a great holiday, travelling from my native Alberta to the Lewis and Clark caves, Yellowstone, the Teutons, making it all the way to Moab in Utah. Looped back through Colorado, Wyoming (+38 C / 100 F), and on my last day, cold and rainy (+12 C / 54 F), I hook up the electric vest, put on the big gloves, and head out from Billings.
Late afternoon, north of Havre, less than 2 hrs from home, a deer rushes out of the ditch at the last minute. I only see him out of the corner of my eye, brake hard and must have turned to dodge him as the V-strom fishtails hard on the wet road, first one way then the other. My last memory is the bike upright but totally sideways.
Wake up on the highway, well ahead of the bike. Try to get up but something is badly wrong with my right shoulder, and it is crunching horribly. People stop to help almost right away, one guy gives me his shoulder and helps me into a pickup. It’s hard to concentrate, everything feels strange, like in a war movie when they slow the time down after a blast. Vision starts to go white, “keep him talking, keep him talking” they say. I know what they are trying to do from taking a first aid course, interested to see it works, I come back.
We keep talking until the ambulance arrives, they are all from my area (Medicine Hat), coming back from a softball tournament in Havre. They load my gear bag with me and decide to haul my bike back across the border in their horsetrailer. Thanks for everything guys!
I ride back strapped on a backboard. So cold they can’t find a vein for the IV. In Havre ER my Aerostich suit is cut to pieces to get it off, any movement of my elbow and I scream uncontrollably. Turns out I have a broken collarbone, shoulderblade, and two ribs.
Two days and I am out. Getting up is extremely painful and walking took some time to master, but I have been back home now for a week. For those Canadians wondering about the US health care system the hospital was very nice, nurses and doctors were excellent. Cost was $1100.00 US a day for the bed, plus drugs. They took copies of my AB health card and my Blue Cross travel insurance, didn’t charge me anything.
Can only do things (incl type) left-handed, so very slow. Little pain unless I bump my elbow or cough. A bunch of floaters in my vision, some flashing at night. Built kind of a nest to sleep in. Have not seen the bike as can't drive my standard truck, and insurance has not got back to me yet.I'm off to buy some one-handed dental floss before I go insane. |

I'm glad to hear you came through it mostly intact. By the look those helmet photos wearing good gear had a lot to do with it! A good friend of mine is an ER doc. He says that they call bikers who don't wear helmets "pending organ donors" Here's hoping your recovery is smooth and uneventful. |

Sorry to hear of the crash PJ. Here's to a speedy recovery! On the plus side, you've got the winter to recover before the next riding season. |

Possibly dead, a lot of the hit looks pretty low. And even with a 3/4 helmet, like the Goldwing riders prefer, I'd have ripped off my face. Urk.
Most of the states I was in had no helmet law at all.

Wow. I was going to say you were lucky but having the right protection probably saved you. I'm going to let my daughter, the wannabe rider, read this thread so she knows what she's getting into. |
