Topic: Advice needed for Mom's next car

Just that.  My mother got in an accident and needs to get a new car.  It was a 07 Sonata and she would like another one.  That's fine with me, but I wouldn't mind some suggestions to cover the bases.

Here are the basics, $16K and a four door sedan, doesn't need to many options, her last Sonata was 4cyl GL with a sunroof.
She has already tried an Impala, Cobalt, Jeep something (sorry couldn't get a clear answer) and a Mazda5.

She likes the Sonata the best, good visibility, and it's comfortable.
With the price range we are most likely looking at used.  We have spotted some on the internet, they do have high KM's for the year, such as...
08's with 50k or an 09 with 35k

Do you think these would be ex-rentals?  If not, are they worth a look?, still have warranty left on them.

if you can find one...they are liquidating pretty fast...a pontiac vibe would be another good orphan option.

used mazda6 and ford fusion are worth considering as well.

Absolutely they would and that's the first thing I think of when I see those Sonatas. 

If you're really curious run a Car Fax on the Sonatas to see if they were rentals.

I saw a report in CBC yesterday stating that used cars are in high demand and are actually increasing in price. A new Elantra or Accent might make more sense in my opinion.

Absolutely they would and that's the first thing I think of when I see those Sonatas.

+1 09 Elantra (in Limited trim as Electronic Stability control was standard equipment)

or even an 07+ City Jetta might fit the bill

if long warranty is high on the priority list also consider a mitsubishi galant.

Just got an email from a friend of a friend that bought an Astra Hybid (I didn't know there was such a thing) for $20K flat including an $8000 instant rebate from GM and $3000 for his 1992 Civic with a billion km's on it.  AMAZING!  Out the door for $21,400 including GST/AC tax, etc.  Original sticker was ~32K.

GM should go bankrupt more often...

Oops, you're right.  My dyslexia kicked in.  Aura hybrid.  I thought the only Saturn hybrid was the Vue, but I was wrong.

Yes the $16K is out the door, and I will take a look at the Saturns.  But my mind does still wonder what will happen in a few years concerning replacement parts.  I'm sure this has been beaten to death but is that something I should be concerned about?

All service and warranty work will be transferred from your Saturn dealer to your local GM dealer. The Astra is only a new car to the North American market. It has been sold around the world for awhile. Its shares a lot of GM global component parts and there is a large aftermarket.

The majority of 1 or 2 yr old cars with high mileage like that are usually ex-rentals.  However that being said, the dealer must disclose that to you.  Also buying an es-rental in ontario is not a bad thing.  These vehicles are constantly inspected and maintained thoroughly according to the Ontario Standards.  I have many clients who have purchased this type and vehicle and have no complaints.  I would definately look into something like that.

Yes, any one year old car with over 40,000 km is most likely an ex-rental.  You can get ex-rentals with under 30,000 km, so keep an eye out for them.  Some rental companies dispose of their cars at lower kilometers....  Hey, bottom line, nothing wrong with an ex-rental. 


There are not likely to be many one-owner 20,000 km Sonatas sitting around on dealer lots.

                  Sonnata is even my favorite as well. So if you are looking for similar car then please try "Honda Accord". It's amazing car, with great looks and features. I am sure that your mom will definitely like this one.
