Ah, gotcha.  Most non-CT tire shops I've dealt with have quoted "installed and balanced" pricing.

The quote we got from Kal Tire was $803 all in for the Arctic Claw; Fountain is still working on getting a couple of quotes.

Is that the Artic Claw TXI model?

Yes, TXI 98T.

Then I hope that price is with wheels, because if not it's about $300 too much!!

Ha Ha!, we have our own (steel) winter wheels.  Does include studding of course though at $26/per tire   Cheesy

And thanks for the heads up.  I will be getting a quote from CT on the General's today, see what they come out to in comparison.

Kal Tire should have their sale on in a few weeks if you can wait a bit.

Got the quote from CT: $773 all in, including studding.  Looks like the new boots for the Sienna will be from CT and will be General Altimax Arctic's.  Just need to see what, if anything, Fountain can do.

I have the final prices/tires from the 3 tire stores.  All prices include mounting, balance, valves, studding, eco fees, taxes, etc.  The CT price also includes "insurance".

Fountain Tire: Pacemark Snowtracker ST/2: $704; (can't find any real info on these except there are a lot of used ones!)

KalTire: Arctic Claw: $803;

Canadian Tire: General Altimax Arctic: $773

So is the best tire, for the prices given, still the General?

Thanks,

Tman

BTW, i just called 1010tires for the Artic Claw TXI tires you were looking for, 215/65R16. Their price is $476, no shipping charge. So i guess Kal Tire is only charging you $300 in labour! lol  Huh

CR's latest tire test is in, and they rated the General Altimax Arctic second of 17 winter tires tested, only behind the X-ice Xi2.

A year ago, I bought a set of four studded Arctic Claw TXI (205/75R14) for my 4x2 truck. They were the cheapest winter tires that I could find locally ($522 after studding, installation and taxes). Quite a few local tire dealers were selling the Arctic Claws. I didn't want to spend a lot of $$$ since I only planned to own the truck for another couple of more years.

These were quite noisy on bare pavement. Not sure how the noise compares with other studded tires since it's my first set.

While I had 8-10 sandbags in the back of my truck, I still managed to get stuck a few times last winter. Had to put the chains on when the side roads got up to 18 inches or so. 4x4 will be a must have feature for my next truck.

Awhile ago, CT had the General Altimax Arctics at 25% off....a great deal IMO. Last week, CT had them sale priced at $40-$75 off per four tires.

Dave

We bought ours on the 25% off sale, just waiting for some cold/snowy/icy weather now!  They sit in the garage, mounted and ready to go.

I saw that, interesting.  Those results could stir quite a bit of discussion I am sure!  Hmm, new topic time   Grin

Just got off the phone with CT.  General Altimax Arctic 225/70/16 for the rear of my Marauder: On sale for $151.99 each plus $14.99 per tire install and balance + taxes.
Better deal than Tires23.com that quoted me $520 for a pair of Hankook RW07 all incl. plus: Effective Sep 1, 2009. in accordance with Ontario Government Regulations, there will be a stewardship Fee of $5.84/tire. Never heard of this before.

Price is normal. Wouldn't say that is on special, as our regular price is $145 each. Tire seems to have rated well, but doesn't sell anywhere near our Blizak's or Pirelli Winter Carving's.

What is one to do if the rear two are getting bald and the front snows have plenty of tread?

The tires on my Marauder are staggered front to back....winter tires are front 225/60/16 and rear 225/70/16 so I can never switch front and back, only side to side.
