First Drive:
2010 Audi R8 5.2 V10

2010 Audi R8 5.2 V10While the R8's new 525-hp V10 engine propels the car from 0-100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds, it's surprisingly docile under mild acceleration, says Senior Editor, Paul Williams.  However, its optional R tronic transmission "lurches unpleasantly," at times, he reports.

No replies? ... Double wow. First one for the incrediby well engineered the R8 is. Still don't like the two dark stripes begind the doors on the car. Know a person have an 2008 model, might get a ride in it.

On a side note, the $173,000 price tag of the V10 is about $5,000 more than the first new house I bought in Calgary back in 2002, 1500 sq-ft 2-story with db attatched garage, now that house should be worth about $425,000. But you don't pay $2500 a year in property tax with an R8.

But you probably pay $2500 a year in insurance...

Am I the only one that thinks why bother?  If you're gonna get a lambo, get one with a lambo badge.

At that price I too would be perhaps looking at the Gallardo. Side by side and given the money to afford either I would be Lambo'sized'.

That doesn't mean I don't like the R8 because I do and it's such a great design execution - including that band.

You can add a Lambo badge on the R8, and a BMW badge besides it as well. Heck, add Hyundai & Toyota, and make it a REAL 4-Winger.

I think the R8 5.2 is a very well executed supercar that has enough civility and comfort to be a daily driver. I guess I tend not to get too excited about cars like this because they are just so far out of the grasp of the average auto enthusiast.

With a car like a Cayman S, or M3 etc. I can see how an average enthusiast could save for years and eventually find a way to buy a good pre-owned example. With cars like the R8 and Lambo Gallardo, I can't help but feel that it is more about exclusivity than automotive enthusiasm.

Then again, if we were talking about an Aston Martin DB9, I probably would have written 4-5 posts by now. I know, I'm a hypocrite. Grin

Maybe it has something to do with the look-at-me factor associated with cars like the R8 and Gallardo. That and the fact that I think the DB9 is a rolling work of art. Drool

Much as I love the DB9, the latest Gallardo really is a work of art, and is probably a far better drivers car than the Aston.

It has been a while so I took another look at the Gallardo... you're right... it is quite a beautiful object. I also don't disagree with your assessment that it probably a much better drivers car than the Aston.

Looks like I need to build a new bay in the fantasy garage. I'll put the Gallardo just down from the Aston as to not obstruct my view. Grin

I guess one never knows, a 28 year old cousin of my spouse won 20 million on the Super 7 a few years ago. I'll be ready if it ever happens to me.  Wink

This discussion reminds me of a guy I met a few years ago.  He was having his Bentley Turbo R serviced at the same shop I was at.  We got talking and he said it was alright, but really it was just the beater he used when he took the dogs with him, didn't want them ruining the leather in the Aston Martin.
Totally different tax bracket than most people.  They have different worries.

BTW, the starter he was replacing was $3500 Shocked

Just in case anyone hasn't seen the LP650:

Much as I love the R8, there is no comparison.

Great ad. A good enough for even Bruce Wayne to drive (I know he had the 640).

Am I the only one that thinks why bother?  If you're gonna get a lambo, get one with a lambo badge.

I Agree I admire the R8 immensely, and adore it as a car, but it would be near the bottom of my shortlist were I in that market. I think the Lambo and the Porsche Turbo would rank well above it... the LP560-4 is a thing of absolute beauty. Drool

Yeah, but when the Lambo is more Audi than Lamborghini to begin with, why bother spending more on the Gallardo?   Wink

A REAL Lamborghini should have a V12 and scissor doors and be in a wild colour.  People buy Lamborghinis for the attention.  To that end, a mint Diablo would achieve 99% of the same effect and you could spend the $100,000 you've got left over for a great, daily-drivable 911 C4S.

And don't try to play the "but the Gallardo is so much faster, blah, blah, blah" card.  If it was all about performance you could buy a new ZR1 and dispense with the beatings.

It was the greatest thing in the world putting those uber-rich dudes on the trailer!  Nothing better.  Except when I told them "You just got owned by a Toyota".  That was awesome!

Yea...my next beast won't be anywhere near as fast...so I have to keep these great memories alive!!  Smiley

But like I said....I was still only driving a Toyota.  Those cars would be awesome to own!
