7-seater: Toyota Highlander / Acura MDX / Honda Pilot
« on: September 04, 2009, 12:19:27 pm »

Hello folks,

Looking a make a choice between these vehicles here...

Am looking to buy a used one .. perhaps not too old, in the 2006 - 2008 range, depending on the mileage & stuff. Is it worthwhile to buy across the border. Understand that MDX is made in Canada but Acura doesn't honour the warranty if the vehicle is brought here? Any suggestions / thoughts ? Have you done any of these vehicles before? Some vehicles that i have seen at the local dealerships here in Vancouver, mostly Highlanders, are all US imported vehicles anyway.

Apppreciate your help here.

Thanks !

Not sure what your query really is? Highlanders are built in Japan, but could be a US car imported into Canada due to the dollar advantages to the Cdn dealer. Confused by your comments.. ???

Hey .. Sorry about the confusion. Query is .. is it worthwhile (cost basis) to buy one of these vehicles from US and import 'em into Canada.  I mentioned the built part coz i understand that the import duty does not have to be paid on the vehicles built within North America?

Ok, follow your idea now.

With the Cdn dollar at about 90c, my guess is that the advantage is small, maybe not even worth doing.....I'm not sure and have never done it.

Others on here who have done may be of more help to you on this, good luck.

I haven't been following used pricing in terms of US vs Canada lately. My best suggestion would be to compare prices in your local area vs the closest major US city by using the US and Canadian Autotrader websites. I know Toyota honours the warranty on US imports while Honda/Acura does not.
My first ever GM ownership experience  can best be described as   "Fool me once...."

I imported an 07 Highlander sport. Toyota honours the warranty up here. I got it back landed for $20,200 including all taxes with a 6.1% duty. This was about 1.5 years ago.

My parents did the same thing.  They bought a 08 highlander in the US and saved like $7K on it here.  You have to remeber that you are looking at some very good quality cars that maybe warrenty might not be an issue.

If I were you I would look at the numbers and then go buy in the US.
I know my parents would buy in the US again.  My brother is not looking for a new Subaru out of the US.

Thanks for the inputs folks. Yep i looked at some comparisons using the Autotrader and Craigslist etc .. there are definitely cost savings but how many depends on a plenty of factors.

Am leaning towards MDX for my liking and also i understand that no excise required on that one as it is a North American manufactured vehicle. Perhaps someone on the board could confirm that for me please.

Cheers!

Hi
I'm looking to purcase a used 206 Acura MDX with tech package ie: navi, back up camera, dvd.. in pearl white. THe MRSP is 31,500 with 55km. They do offer CPO warranty.
Also looking at a Black Touring package with navi or back up camera with 85km and $3000.00 less.
Any thoughts on either. Dealership does not seem to want to budge much on price... they claim to have only a $1400.00 margin.

I like the option to buy in the States, and with the canadian dollar being very strong it's a good time to buy. The taxes and the vehicle clearances should be done with an authorized dealer or if you know a good trusted auto broker, have them do all the paper work and voila! Newer car with some real cost savings! The only beef I have is the speedometer reading. Some US models only have miles on the dash. And some have both Kilometers and miles. The savings should be enough to replace the dash with a metric one. !  Good luck with your purchase! I favour the Honda Pilot over the MDX and the Highlander. Just a personal choice.

Cheers! From Ontario.
