My girlfriend wants to junk her 1998 Honda Civic (it's rusting away) and she wants to get another car within a year or so. What cars would you recommend for her? She wants a car with passing power (I'm tired of praying when she's merging on the 401). I suggested she get a car with a minimum of 140-150HP. It must be automatic, 4 cylinder, A/C and CD. No SUV/CUV or trucks. She can live with a hatchback or trunk. She does not like American, Korean or European cars I suggested a Mazda 3 or 6 (Or equivalent Ford Focus/Fusion) Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Hyundai Sonata, etc. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, she's not gonna like the Sonata because it's Korean. Anyway, yeah, most Japanese midsized cars are a good solid used buy, especially the Accord, Camry, and Altima (also the Sonata, but it's Korean ). |

Why does she not like Euro cars? Not that there would be much in that price range anyway... |

Thanks for the suggestions, I will forward it to her.
She doesn't like Euro cars as they cost more to maintain and history of electrical problems (VW)
vdk- you just made me remember, Pontiac Vibe (really a Toyota Corolla).
"Should be a decent number of Mazda 3s available." - I know she loves those cars, maybe a 2005 would be good
Thanks for the help |

Check out the rust issue with 04 and 05 years first: torontomazda3 dot com. I understand they have solved the rust issue with 07 models but we're yet to see that. Also a heavy Matrix or Vibe will require some planning before merging or overtaking. However, you'll save on gas and maintenance... |

others to consider
6th generation (1998-2002) honda accord is a nice size and the 2.3L 4 banger with VTEC (LX and EX trims) should do the trick.
2004-2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart (2.4L engine)
2003-2006 Mitsubishi Galant
I would probably get a Mazda6 Sport (hatchback), Masda3 Sport (hatchback), or a Saab 9-3 (most safety features).
Have Fun!

bozo - Yeah, I read about that thread actually on Canadiandriver re: rust issues with Mazda 3. Great info to know. I showed her that and told her if she considers Mazda 3, go for a more recent model.
02MP5MT - Thanks for the great suggestions, I will forward it to her

Could import one of the Aussie Mercury Capris I guess. That may break the $5000-8000, $10K max budget. If money is no object, then a Holden would be good for passing power. |

Thanks, I'm well aware of that problem and stay away from the V6 Honda Accords of that generation with Autos. |
