I think this car is stunning. If they price this thing as competitively as they do in the US, and Camrys keep accelerating uncontrollably through store fronts, then we could have a new midsize king.
And as for the SE, Hyundai for some reason has a weird habit of screwing over Canadian customers with packages/trim levels for no reason whatsoever.
The most recent example I can think of is how in the US the Elantra gets a nice, integrated radio that is built into the dash, has a nice display, nice buttons, XM etc.
In Canada the Elantra gets this piece of crap single DIN pop in unit that looks like it came out of a 99 Civic, with tiny crap buttons, no XM capability, an ugly look, etc. |

http://www.canadiandriver.com/2010/02/11/hyundai-announces-pricing-for-redesigned-2011-sonata.htmHyundai announces pricing for redesigned 2011 Sonata Markham, Ontario – Hyundai Auto Canada Corporation has announced pricing for its redesigned 2011 Sonata. The 2011 Sonata offers more content with only minor price increases from the previous model year Sonata, and starts at under $23,000, said the company. For example, at $22,649, the entry-level 2011 Sonata GL – which comes with a six-speed manual transmission – is only $150 more than the base 2010 Sonata. The volume seller for Sonata is the GL with an automatic transmission. For 2011, it is offered for $24,249, only $250 more than the 2010 model. The GL automatic includes an improved engine with more power, better fuel economy and lower emissions. The six-speed automatic transmission replaces a five-speed transmission, and it offers a long list of standard features, including Electronic Stability Control with Traction Control, a Bluetooth hands-free phone system, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, and solar glass. These features add up to a total of $750 worth of content for a price increase of only $250. “The Sonata is an important vehicle for our brand,” said John Vernile, vice president, marketing, Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. “We know the sleek styling is going to grab a lot of attention, so we’re pleased to offer pricing that makes it attainable.” Thanks to a new 2.4-litre Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) four-cylinder engine, new six-speed manual and automatic transmissions and highly refined aerodynamics, the all-new Sonata offers class-leading fuel economy. Along with improved fuel economy, the GDI engine also enables the Sonata to offer tremendous power and decreased emissions. This is the only direct-injection engine among its competitors, Fusion, Camry, Malibu, Accord, Altima, and Mazda6. Pricing Summary: Model/Trim Engine Transmission M.S.R.P. Sonata GL 2.4L DOHC I4 Six-speed manual $22,649 Sonata GL Auto 2.4L DOHC I4 Six-speed automatic $24,249 Sonata GLS 2.4L DOHC I4 Six-speed automatic $26,249 Sonata Limited 2.4L DOHC I4 Six-speed automatic $28,999 Sonata Ltd. I'm not keen on the silver plastic trim that stretches along the whole of the car right down to the bonnet. You have to wonder how that will wear over the long term. Great effort and not at all cheap Korean looking car. It's even got the slightly happy face too. Just like the Mazda. Is that the trend these days. http://autoshow.autotrader.ca/2010/02/12/live-from-cias-2010-2011-hyundai-sonata/o the Sonata might have lost its crown within the company, but it is fighting back with style. For the 2011 model year, the sixth-generation version of the Sonata will hit the market, and its stunning design is sure to cause its competitors some sleepless nights. Penned at their design studio in Irvine, California with a team lead by Philip Zak, the theme was to create a very “Fluidic Sculpture.” The end result is a very coupe-like sedan, and it does look rather attractive. However, this is not an original idea, since the Germans have been at it for a few years now with cars like the Mercedes-Benz CLS and the VW Passat CC. However, the Sonata will most certainly be a lot more affordable. Infact, at the 2010 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, Hyundai Canada announced pricing for this new model, and they start at $22,649. Even the top-spec model will only run you $30,999, and that version even comes with their excellent new touch-screen navigation system. Plus, the other interesting thing about the new Sonata is that for now atleast, no matter which trim package you choose, you’ll get the same engine. It is a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine, that features double over head cams, variable valve timing, and direct injection. The end result is 198 hp and 184 lb/ft of torque. Thanks to this engines impressive power figures, Hyundai has dropped the V6 engine from the Sonata line-up. However, later this year, a gas-electric hybrid version will also hit the market, using “Lithium Polymer” batteries. Not only are lithium polymer batteries easier to package, because the battery pack is flexible and hence can be placed much more efficiently in the cars platform, as compared to the old-fashioned nickel metal hydride batteries as used by Honda and Toyota. Lithium polymer batteries also weight 30% less, takes up 50% less volume, and offers 10% greater efficiency. So it looks like Hyundai’s first hybrid will also be one of the most efficient in the market. It has also been suggested that a smaller-displacement turbo-charged motor would also be offered on the Sonata at some point next year. For now, the 2.4-liter motor, named GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection), will be available with either a six-speed manual gearbox, or a six-speed automatic. Look for this sleek new Sonata to hit the showrooms by March 2010. |

Hard to believe I was banned from vtec.net (Voyageur) for pissing off a gatekeeper (Notyper) when I developed a theme around this car challenging those TL owners keen to downsize.
I also went on a bit about the Toyota Beige problem with dumbing down American drivers with cars like the Lexus HS 250.

That character line down the side looks like it will attract door dings like crazy. Gotta like that 2.4L engine though. |

autoblog: When we got our first in-person look at the 2011 Hyundai Sonata at the Los Angeles Auto Show, we were pretty impressed with what we saw. The Korean automaker delivered on expressive design for its all-important midsize offering while promising a potent 198 horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a class-leading 35 miles per gallon highway. But the promises didn't end there. Hyundai also mentioned that it would utilize a turbocharged and direct-injected four in place of a V6 offering, and a hybrid version of the Sonata that utilizes technologically advanced lithium polymer batteries. But we haven't heard much about the turbo or hybrid models post-LA, until now.
Product Planning head Scott Margason reportedly popped onto Hyundai's official twitter page to inform us that the 2011 Sonata Turbo and Hybrid would make their grand entrance at the 2010 New York Auto Show. With three distinct variants of the Sonata and a price of entry under $20,000, Hyundai could stand to gain quite a bit of street cred (and market share) in the hyper-competitive midsize segment. We can't wait for details on specs, but with the media days at the New York show scheduled to start March 31, we reckon we'll know soon enough. Great news. There is now hope Canada will get the SE with a turbo as part of the package. |

Examined it first hand yesterday at autoshow. They've hit the nail on the head with the design IMO. There was kind of a gathering around sitting in cockpit and people saying this one is really nice. They actually wanted to see other faces light up. Very well done.
Brochure says "WHERE STYLE AND LUXURY CONVERGE" and I think that accurate. Does Lexus ES 350 have to worry? I think journalists who from Canada are scheduled for 2 weeks from now, will indicate as much. The turbo is said to have 260 HP and only 4-cyl.s available. Same engine to be in 'blue-drive' hybrid, also out later this year.
One participant says maybe SE version coming with turbo. He was from a dealer and really does not know.
But this is the value car from the show!

Had a chance to see and sit in a couple of them. In short... the car looks excellent in person (better than the photos where it looks good) and the interior is brilliant. I felt really comfortable there and the car didn't feel too big as some family sedans do feel to me. I think Hyundai has a hit... the worst part about it is that it makes other older parts of their lineup feel dated. The Elantra and Santa Fe are definitely looking dated in comparison... but I know that those are due for a redesign shortly (seen the Elantra spy photos).
Definitely a bit of a luxury feeling sitting in one. |
