Day 1:

2009 Lexus IS-F
The Kia Soul seemed to be a hit with everyone, including my co-workers, my friends and many random people around town, as well as with me.  So will this week's tester be a hit with just as many people, while it will it go unnoticed by others. To the untrained eye, it looks like pretty much every other Lexus IS sedan on the road, but to many my tester this week is a rare and welcomed sight -- the 2009 Lexus IS-F.  More...

I have seen a couple of these out and about, it needs to look more purposeful IMHO.  I like understated but I think this is too understated.

But that's generally what Lexus owners are after....

I am not a fan of the IS look in general, but do love this car. Saw a blue one on the highway the other day, other than the dual-stack pancake style exhaust tips, looks just like an ordinary IS. Indeed the ultimate sleeper in terms of a GO car.

I agree in part, but there is a price/boring look ratio that I just cannot cross.

I don't think it looks boring at all....I mean...a BMW M3 doesn't look terribly menacing either....

Lot of money for a very fancy looking Corolla with mighty small rear seat area and cheap looking dash(maybe pics don;t do it justice).
Tough segment for the IF when compared to the M3 sedan for $3-4Gs more or for $3,000 less the 2010 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C63 AMG, IMO appears to be much more worthy of the north of $60,000 price tag.

No experience with the IS-F, but I HATED my recent drive of the IS 250 AWD. One of the biggest automotive disappointments in years.

Top Gear had a look at this and compared it to the BMW M3. Jeremy Clarkson felt the lexus beat up the driver too much, had a good deal of understear and even though it did most things well, the bmw did everything well, although at a higher price.

I'm curious; what disappointed you so much?

Lexus are starting to look dated even against their own line ups. I'm sure it is a wonderful car But the design needs to be exciting. Fashion forwards. Isn't this how Toyota capture America in the first place. By redesigning and improving their cars every 4-5 years?

I drove an IS250 AWD a few times last year and while I wasn't blown away by it - it's definately a nice car. Not sure what the deal is with the "biggest automotive disappointment in years." comment. I'd be interested to hear why it was so bad. I also drove a C230 in a rare 6spd with the sport package and custom wheels on it (Merc. AMG rims from Germany I believe) and found it to be much more to my liking.

Anyway I think if Lexus even comes close with this first pass at a legitimate contender to the M3 it should be considered a success. That car has been around for decades and most automotive jounalists I think would consider it the best sport sedan in the world. $60k is a lot of money though for an unproven car when you consider the competition - I hope for Lexus's sake that it performs as well as the other 2 (M3 and C63)

I drove an IS250 RWD sport package 6MT, and I thought it was a very good car.  Hideously cramped inside, but otherwise highly competitive with similar-priced BMW, etc.

Anyhoo, people think the IS-F is understated?!  Really?!  I think it looks like the 2 Fast 2 Furious crowd got ahold of an IS350 and just ruined it with tacky bodywork (and those absurd exhaust tips).

I think it looks mellower in pics.  It's a bit more brash in the flesh....but still a bit understated.  IMO the car that looks the most "in your face" is the CTS-V.

I've driven my sister's IS-350 several times, and let me tell you that that car is THE easiest car i've ever driven.

It's very quick and it's got all the comfort features that you could ever want; including cooled seats.  Smiley
