This Sucks
« on: August 06, 2009, 05:26:44 pm »
I'm sitting here on the side of the road.  Flat tire and the replacement tube from the bike shop is schraeder valve and I need presta!  Good grief!  No problem, I'll just fix it with my tube repair kit, right?  Fixed one hole after 15 minutes of searching and the tire still won't fully inflate.  Oh well, my wife will be here in 10 minutes.  Bad things happen in sets of 3, correct?  So I guess I don't have to worry about being run over for the next little bit.

Guess I'll count cows and browse the forum while I wait...

That does suck.  Did you check to make sure that whatever caused the flat wasn't still embedded in the tire after you patched the tube?  If not, then it's quite possible you got a new puncture after repairing the inner tube.

I too got a flat on my commute in to work yesterday.  A piece of glass got embedded right in the middle of the tread and worked its way through the anti-puncture belt.  I'm now out a tire as well.  :(

Rrocket, yes they do make some solid tubes for bicycles but I haven't actually seen any in a shop.  Also, from what I understand, the solid tubes are heavy and don't ride well.  A better solution is to get "slime" (i.e. liquid latex) into your tubes or tires if running tubeless.

Presta = universal donor
Schraeder = universal acceptor

I only carry Presta tubes as spares.

Yes...I use Slime (or Tire Goo) in my off road tires.  Lifesaver!!

Yes, I checked for debris and crap.  My rear tire was worn down after only 1500 km so it was due for replacement anyway (which I did tonight).  I replaced it with a cheapie Kenda from a local cycle shop but ordered a pair of Continental Travellers as a replacement.

FWIW, I've found ebay a good source for bicycle tires, especially tubulars.

  I replaced it with a cheapie Kenda

When I had an roll chart race that crossed over sections of highway, I used to run the Kenda Trackmasters on my enduro.  They were one of the toughest knobbies on the market.  Otherwise, my 650 used to spit the knobbies off....

Shi..s happens.

I was on a 40km trip with a bunch of friends, wind was blowing hard, was really cold and raining a lot so we decided to take a rest at a gas station. Getting there I realized my front tire was just flat. No problem, I had 2 replacements. Disassembled the tire, took the tube out and when I tried to put in the new tube I realized the rim had a hole to fit only presta valves and the replacement tube had a schraeder. My cousin had a repair kit, problem solved... NOT. Looked for the hole on the flat tube, reached for the repair kit, repaired the tube, put air on it, the air is gone. WTF happened??? Me and my friend where chatting during the repair process and did the repair somewhere else, not on the hole... Did it all again, I was freaking freezing, everything went ok on the second take, ehehehehe.

So it turns out that my Vittoria touring tires are actually quite good.  I was disappointed to get the flat, but when I replaced the tire I found 7 other cuts, some with glass or metal shards still in them.  So I guess the extra puncture protection did do its job since it took eight tries before I actually had a flat.

Bummer.   At least you didn't have to walk your bike home.  Usually I get caught without my patch kit and have to walk home.  After patching, I would put the inner tube underwater to see if there any other leaks I missed.   I have so many patches on my inner tube that I probably should buy a new inner tube one of these days.

I'll go up to 4 patches before I replace a tube.  The other Presta/Schrader issue is having a compatible pump when you need it.  My favourite is finding the patch rubber cement tube is dried out.

"Serial" flats can be caused by pinching the tube while changing it, but probably you guys know better than to do that.  Sometimes as we roll to a stop with a flat tire, more punctures are created between the rim and the ground.  And often these "pinch" type punctures come in sets of two as a fold of inner tube rubber is caught between the rim and the obstruction.

As for solid tires, there's a good reason why inflatable tires were hailed as a significant invention.

My childhood bike had solid rubber tires.  It wasn't very comfortable to the lower body parts if I recall.
