VW group is doing pretty good, and their worldwide market share has increased. They are positioned very well in this recessionary period.
Manufacturer July 2009 July 2008 % change Audi 822 583 +40.3 Volkswagen 4,018 3,506 +14.6
Worldwide news:
In the first six months of the year, Europes largest automobile manufacturer delivered 3.1 million (H1 2008: 3.3 million) vehicles worldwide. Although the overall market contracted by around 18 percent, Group deliveries decreased by only 4.4 percent. Consequently, its share of the global passenger car market rose to 12.0 percent (9.9 percent).
VW ? 3 Letters TDI!!! I was recently talking to a friend who is a sales manager at a Vw dealer and they can't get or keep TDIs especially wagons. VW has prorams and rates on many Models but I guess TDIs just sell themselves. You'd think other manufactures would take the hint. |

I suspect that this gain, like in the US, is driven partly by fleet sales. GM and Chrysler's dealer lots are empty right now, and Toyota isn't enough for those rental companies.
The inventory levels at Chryco and GM stores is the biggest challenge for them, and the biggest boost To FoMoCo. Virtually all lines are seriously depleted. A buddy works at a big GM store, they have a total of 4 trucks. 2007 this time they would have 250 on the ground. Chrysler store has 7 2009 RAMS. 5 Caravans, no Jeeps, Durangos, Sebrings, Chargers and 1 300. You can't sell from empty shelves, and frankly I am quite amazed Chrysler isn't down more than they are. |

Good on Ford I say. I have to say I'm not surprised by the decline in Honda sales. Because how more can the sell here in Canada. Have you look around lately I never seen such a popular car. It seems like every single car is a MK8 Civic. I went into a supermarket yesterday and when I game out. There were, I'm not lying I counted 14 MK8 civic's park around mind. It times like this when you want a digital Camera on hand. Anyways good on Ford. It surprising how wrong that pic is is now. LOL who knew Ford would not be in trouble in the credit car crunch.....lol.... |

Have you noticed the breakdown between Fleet and non Fleet is seldom mentioned, and only when its used to try and portray the manufacturer in a favorable light? This applies to all manufacturers who 'deal' in fleet. So we are basically left to guess-and-be-fooled about retail sales.
Well, when looking at July's Retail numbers the results are even more spectacular for Ford: Ford +62.8% GM -36.8% Chrysler -23.4% Toyota -15.9% |

Such a difference in Europe were Japanese cars are not very popular. Having the opportunity to drive a friends Civic for a few days I cannot see what it is about the Civic that makes Canadian drivers flock to it. I noticed that most dealership lots were low on new car inventory. Visiting my brother who is a Ford sales consultant for a dealership just outside of Ottawa and they had diddly squat for inventory, but they are moving everything as soon as it hits the lot. |

MKII The roads here are full of Civics 'cos there no Skodas, Peugeots, Renaults, Citroens, Seats, Fiats, Alfas etc. available to buy. Nor are there any Fiestas or euro Focuses yet. The only BMW 1 series are coupes with huge engines, no M-B A class. No Polo. Sooooo the Civic, Corolla, Mazda 3, Versa, Fit, Yaris, Rio etc. replace all those brands and models. Just the way it is. Neither GM nor Chrysler make a good small car at the moment
The Civic IS a GOOD CAR starts on cold days, doesn't rust, is very reliable and has a generation of buyers who have bought Hondas since they were teenagers with their first handmedown one.

tpl, very good points. Very small selection indeed. I did notice a few Hyundai i30 on the road, but with a different name, called Elantra Touring. This car is selling very well throughout EU. When we were driving around Toronto my 11 year old commented that the car designs look very old in comparison to the modern looking cars we have in Europe. And also wanted to know why the Ford Focus looked like a Japanese car compared to our Focus here. I got had quite a over that comment. Any chance BMW Canada will try and sell the 1 series hatch over there? |

Forgot Hyundai. Far fewer hatchbacks here. Not because Canadians don't like them, its 'cos Americans don't like them. AFAIK BMW North American does NOT want to sell 4 cyl cars or hatchbacks and will resist this as they thinbk it will cheapen the brand.
There are many Japanese cars in Euland but most of them look different from those here, Civic being an example as are Accords.
As for your 11 year old's observation. The "look" of the street is different for sure. Bigger cars, more SUVs, less small "people carriers" ( Mazda 5 size), very few vans made on car chassis ( Transit connect type ), MANY more pickup trucks. Now I wouldn't call that more or less modern just different. |

I found it kind of sad that there isn't much choice of buying cars in NA. Each brand in Europe has way more cars models on offer and also a lot more choice in colours too. I was surprised when I came here even the vans were horrible old fashion and out dated and the some of Domestics cars too. But when you considering that they sell more cars in LA than the whole of Canada help put things in perspective. Canada is very small car market and cars are lot cheaper than Europe....But saying this on this board has always been a very contentions issue. But true. Even the stores here are the same. There is in Canada lack of choice in products IMO. But Canada is such a great place that is really its non issue. |

The only thing is, there is more choice here in terms of the different sizes of cars you can buy at a reasonable price, as the greater European variety (excluding super expensive cars) is found in a narrower size range. |
