No wagon?  I wonder what the percentage of sedans to wagons sold has been in Canada?  I rarely see a sedan.

Once again, Subaru baffles me.
No place I'd rather be...

Agreed. All they have to do now is replace AWD with FWD and they're all set!  ::)

Looks interesting and I might take a test drive in one, especially to verify the remarks made by another reviewer on another site that in the manual transmission version, he kept hitting the Hazard lights button when shifting....not good....  ??? :rofl2:

The steering wheel looks a lot like Mazda's.

I take it you don't care much for the new Outback?

I feel that the Outbacks have not been good value for a long time.  Priced significantly higher than the Legacy and not really offering what I thought was enough to justify the price difference.  Now, I've owned two of them (a 99 and an 01, both Limited trim) and bought both slightly used, and loved the value then as they'd depreciated a TON.  US pricing is another story though.  We saw new OBW's in Montana for $20K flat.

Actually, what does the Outback offer more than the Legacy? Excluding the raised height and wagon, of course...

The styling of this interior is very gimmicky and overstyled, much like the new exterior. I far prefer the previous model in that regard.

One thing the new Legacy does do, is make me appreciate the one that I have, and completely quell any desire I may have had to replace it.  ;D

I find the exterior of this car handsome enough but not attractive enough that I'd give it a second look as I passed by. I recently spent a week or so in an '08 Legacy GT Spec B and while certainly a pleasant driver it was utterly devoid of anything resembling a soul or even character. It had a Cobb tuner and certainly had some pleasing performance but again, absolutely no "wow" factor. Competence wrapped up in utter blandness, thy name is Legacy.

Yea..but plenty of cars in that segment are rather bland.  Including those from GM, Ford, Toyota, Honda, etc...

Huh.  I guess I'm the only one here who really likes this car.  Though the "don't just share your opinion, vote with your pocketbook" crowd on the site should hang on my every word ;) because I'm a former Legacy owner who said "never again" after growing increasingly frustrated over time with a 2006 model.

Anyway, the exterior and interior design are nice enough.  Not great, but not unpleasant.  The wheel arches are nice.  Still, it's a Subaru, and I don't think anyone buys Subarus for the nice looks.  This is the company that once advertised its own cars as ugly, right?

What do I really like?

(1)  It's a proper midsize car.  If you want a compact Subaru, buy an Impreza.  The previous-gen Legacy was a smaller midsize on the outside, but the interior packaging was so poor it was barely competitive with most compact sedans.  Both the Focus and the Jetta give more useable interior space (based on sitting in them; I haven't looked up the EPA interior measurements).  This change in size to a proper midsize helps distinguish the Legacy from the Impreza, and gives real useable interior space for people who want something more than a compact.

(2)  Ride quality and steering are praised on page 3.  Neither was particularly good with my 2006.

(3)  Telescoping steering wheel.  The 2006 Legacy didn't have one, and honestly, the wheel was always too close to me (relative to the pedals, so moving the seat around wouldn't help).  Given the price of the 2006 Legacy, this was a major oversight.

(4)  More comfortable and more supportive seats.  Another major oversight of the 2006 Legacy, given its price.  I didn't notice it on a half-hour test drive, but after two hours in the car, all I could say was "really?"  Once again, barely competitive with compact economy sedans.

(5)  Six-speed manual instead of a five-speed.  Helps you make the most out of a base engine that never felt as powerful as its horsepower rating.  Hopefully they improved the shift action too.

(6)  Traditional window frames.  Should help cut down on the excessive wind noise mine had.

Now, some will say that this car has lost its essential Subaru-ness.  I couldn't disagree more.  It's got a boxer engine, a longitudinal crank, and a Subaru full-time AWD system.  It's still very much a Subaru, regardless of whether it's got a comfortable back seat or reduced wind noise.

In short, this is the Legacy that, conceivably, could bring me back to Subaru.

It's the headlights, the C-pillar, and the slight bulbousness to the doors.

I'm with Mitlov, I also find this car quite attractive.  The article points out a chain for the CVT, interesting
http://www.subaru.com/engineering/transmission.html

This intrigues me...

Unexpectedly, there is only an auto up/down feature for power windows on all models except the 2.5i (auto down only). This seems an oversight, as even some budget compact cars feature auto up/down on all four windows.

...really, like what? a Rio, Accent, Cobalt, Corolla, Civic, Sentra...myself never seen it...

My Altima and my Xtrail have auto up and down for driver and passenger in front, and I have not seen this on to many cars with it period.

Pretty much disagree with everything Mitlov said.

I've never had any problem with the comfort, handling, or space of my 2008 Outback.

I can "sit behind myself" without touching the front seat and I'm average height, so I never understood the space issue. I've driven 8 hours to Cape Breton with no back issues, which is saying something. And I've hit 7L/100km on this highway, which isn't shabby. Six speed manual transmissions inevitably offer the tradeoff of higher highway mileage for lower city mileage, simply because 1st is "shorter" and top is "higher".

Making it bigger and fatter is simply retrograde no matter what the rest of the segment is doing.

It's a mystery to me how anyone could prefer the styling of this:
