So far the Soul is a City Run-about Vehicle only?

James - curious as to what the engine is turning when on the highway at 100 kph?

I really like this little guy and only wish AWD was an option and then it would be perfect, okay almost, because a bigger engine never hurts.

Hmmm, bigger engine, awd, more interior space, ... bigger tires & wheels ... has some grown up to do then.

Who's saying anything about more interior space? It already offers more usable space than anything else similar (Fit, Accent, Rio, Versa, Yaris, etc.)

I'm sure the 2.0L is just fine, but I'd like to see the new 2.0L they've put in the Forte instead. And if anything, its wheels are too big. The 16" that come with the 2u are perfect for this size.

The only things I'd like to see are telescopic steering and AWD as an option. Other than that, I don't see anything else missing.

I think the 18s are there for the highschool/college crowd - although at that price I agree with most that I'd probably look for something else with a bit more jam to it. I mean the thing has LEDs in the speakers - so right there that tells you who they're marketing the Burner edition to. $24k eh? How close is that to an Impreza hatchback?

It is nice to see Kia (and Hyundai) finally get some respect. They've been making reliable vehicles for a few years now - now we're starting to see some interesting ones.

Now that I took a closer look at it, I think the "cool" factor is kind of skin deep.
Cheap, old platform (Rio), old engine, old 4AT...The standard BT, remote audi-controls, heated mirrors and seats, USB port and the glowing speakers cannot really compensate for all of that, at least as far as I'm concerned.

I keep thinking it is a clone.

But it is big bright and fancy interior and cheap and look like a station wagon and should sell well base on those merits.

I have to ask wing. The main complaints I've heard is that it has a harsh ride and noisy engine so does it?

The ride is just fine, the engine is a bit grumbly.

It has a heavily modified Rio platform.  It's not "new", but like most manufacturer, KIA modified an existing chassis to keep the cost down.  The engine is a bit dated and the AT could use a fifth gear (I would take the MT) but it's not bad hardware.  We're talking about KIA here ... not a new BMW.

The interior is not luxurious but it's far from cheap.  The heated seats, heated mirrors and Bluetooth come standard.  For just under 18 000$ (MT), you get ABS, ESC, TCS and 6 air bags (seat+curtain).

It blows my mind in this day and age that not all cars have a 5speed auto - all manufacturer's have them in other cars - so why not use them exclusively (unless they have 6 or 7 speeds in their pricier models)? I would think it would save costs and improve economy and power.

That's exactly my point: it's still a Kia. I would've expected them to move up on the ladder with every new car. I know they are not the only company still offering 4AT and iron block engines, but still... Toyota can afford for now to still offer 4AT in cars like Yaris, Corolla and RAV4, but Kia should try to better the competition at least on paper.

The retro-tech 4-speed would be a deal-breaker for me, were I shopping for an automatic.  Thankfully there's a manual, which is what I would opt for in any event.

8.4L/100 km on the highway is nothing to write about I believe. There are plenty of V6 SUVs, bigger and more powerfull that can do that or better.
