hyundai elantra or mazda protege would be better choices, especially since the optra has been discontinued

good luck!

Agreed. That Chevy is no Chevy; it's a rebranded Daewoo—GM's Korean affiliate notorious for bad quality four or five years ago. And of all all the bad models Daewoo produced, the Optra (AKA Daewoo Lacetti AKA Suzuki Forenz) gets a special shout-out for flunking quality surveys.

Elantra and Protege are great cars. The Ford Focus wasn't bad by 04 or 05 (but don't go any earlier)--you might find something interesting there in your price range.

Having owned 3 GM cars with an MSRP under 20k I can say that price is on the high side.

My father-in-law had one of the first fully loaded Daewoo Leganza's sold in Canada till mid 2007. He never had any issue with it. Just regular wear and tear expenses (i.e. brakes, battery).

GM still supports the Optra, so parts won't be an issue. Parts are reasonably priced and there are aftermarket options. If it's well taken care off and you can knock off $1000 off the price, its not a bad buy.

O4 Optra Its not expensive or cheap. It's about top whack what they sell for. In terms of reliability it is anyone guess. It is really the luck of the draw and a lot of touching wood IMO.
