I was paying 1600 for a year for a 06 CRV(0$ ded) in Eastern ONT...I moved to freaking Windsor...and guess what my insurance went up to 2750!..just beacause I moved..WTF!!! I have insurance with Belair Direct. I did check with a few others and the best one I got was 2100(500$ ded)....and darn I have a lease and I cant have just 3rd party liability !...I'm loosing my head as I was planning to get a cheap second car and now I will be paying 1150$ extra for the one I already have!.....SUX big time

Anyways...I think I'll get over it a few days.....now back to 2 options I 'm looking at:

1. 93 Infiniti G20 for about 1900$ with 166K Km's( a bit shady though , isnt it? a 16 yr old car with only 166k..it has km counter unlike the digital ones which maybe easy to manipulate). The car drove well with just about ok ok  kick still left in it.

2. 04 Grand AM (V6, I'm guessing GT) with 100K km's for abt 5k. I'm yet to drive this one, but by the looks of it, seems fine.

I'm looking to get a car in which I can drive around running errands and maybe once in 2-3 months drive up to Toronto or Chicago...which one looks like a better deal guys?

That is a bummer on insurance, same thing happened to me a while ago.

Personally I wouldn't go near a Grand Am, but that's just me.

How about the 93 G20 Infiniti ? The car was decent and i think I can negotiate a bit too...it has some rust on the front mudflaps and more under the body ....

Personally I'm not buying a 17 year old car that wasn't a high volume car with tons of parts availability. Even if the low miles are true stuff wears out after 17 years just from time. Low miles like that if its true mean it sat around ALOT. That's not a good thing.

A quick trader search in Windsor for 3 to 5 K reveals a fair number of 04 or better Accent or Kia Rio with less than 100K for the price range. Pretty basic and not a pargon of reilability but you could do much worse. 5 years old vs 17,lots of parts and place that will work on them. Fair amount of 02-04 Ford Focus (most reacll issues solved by thenI would hope) Saturn Ions. Cavaliers. None of them were on CR 10 best or most reilable but all would make good cheap transporation without rust to worry about either.

Sucks about the insurance. Glad I don't live in Ontario that's for sure.

Did anything else change before you moved? Any tickets? Also, what is your age?

I find $2700 very high for Windsor as I only pay $1600 for a '09 GTi and I live in Toronto. Heck, I even find $1600 high for Eastern Ontario.  BTW, when I moved from London - Toronto my insurance increased by 50%. Moving by a postal code in Toronto can increase your rates.

My insurance dropped like a stone when I left downtown To for Guelph.  As Quad says, a postal code move can do it.

Even within Toronto rates vary widely. Nobody I work with can believe how much I pay for insurance..that is until I tell them to try an online quote with my postal code.

I believe that location is a huge determining factor with any insurance premium. Even in BC here with ICBC being Provincially owned, where you live makes a difference in your premium. I pay less here in Kelowna than I would in Vancouver; but I pay more than I would in some smaller centres around the province.

Standard practice, and with a valid reason as accident/incedent rates vary from centre to centre.

Credit Risk & Insurance Risk has been determined by postcode for a long time.  Some streets not far from each other can be massively different in character and crime stats.  Stay away from the Proles and you'll be fine.  ;) :rofl2:

I guess you could move to Saskatchewan where good drivers pay the same high amount as bad drivers.

No . nothing changed..no tickets and I'm 31....just changed cities!..My insurance in Est ONT was 1600 cause I have 3 yr old Canadian license (though I had been driving for 15 yrs before i came to Canada)+ I had 0$ deductible..all coupled together with a new Honda lease made the insurance pretty high(heck I was paying 2000 for my first yr!)......but I 'm really amazed how high it has gone after moving here....Yesterday ,I called them to find out the additional ins for a second car and thought might as well update my address as well...and BAM! >:( ! I lost my head for a bit ...and the worst part is, my wife was sitting right next me :o you can all guess what must have happened after that  >:(   lol..I called up State Farm and they quoted me 3300!!!!....and now I have decided to stay with Belair with 500$ ded and next month my rate will be 2200 I have made peace with it now ::)

Sad but true, with our Edge it was $300 cheaper because we live in Abbotsford,(guess ICBC hasn't heard of the Bacon brothers) than if it had the same insurance in Surrey, where we got it.  The agent said the rate went up when you crossed 256th.  Which is about a five minute drive from where I live.

Living in Brampton is a treat, too.  People talk about property taxes when discussing a region, but this issue never comes up.
