BMW X1--production
« on: July 04, 2009, 06:28:43 am »
For people who thought that the X3 had too much utility?  I don't get it.  The back seat looks real tight, particularly if you can't get your feet under the front seats (and it doesn't look like you can).  Not much room behind the second row either.

I was also hoping for a Z4-style interior--I like that new style a LOT better--but this interior is pretty much par for the course for BMW for the past few years.

And from what I've heard, it IS coming to North America.

It will sell just on the badge alone. Smaller cars are becoming very popular and if gas prices stay above or near the $1 mark, people will give it a look.

Yes, the X1 is coming to NA, probably for the 2011 MY. It will be out in Europe soon, but is delayed coming here. As I posted in the BMW thread, the next X3, due in a about 2 years as well, will be larger than the existing X3 and certainly refreshed as the current X3 came out in 2003 IIRC. BTW, none of these are really about "utility" (as queries by Mitlov) as all new stuff of this type are crossovers.

IMO, the X1 will be a winner for BMW. The ones I don't understand are the GTs (aka hatchbacks) for the 3 and 5 Series.
2011 BMW X3 35i Vermillion Red, MSport
and
2012 Toyota Camry SE V6 in Alpine White

Yeah, but it still annoys the crap out of me.

Not that any BMW shareholders are losing sleep about that.

Nor will the rest of us... ;) ;D ;D

Seriously, why should the production of any vehicle like this annoy you? It is smaller, will use smaller & more efficient engines (likely a small diesel, at least in Europe) and has some utility for small families. It's not a gross, energy consuming monster like some of the big trucks and SUVs that have come to market recently.
I don't understand your problem with it....???

In a few years time, I could see myself maybe having an X1 in the family.

I already find the X3 cramped, so doubt I'll have a love affair with an X1. With the right price, it'll certainly sell well. Have to question going downmarket so far with 1ers as they likely take away sales from the more profitable 3-Series portfolio without increasing total sales much overall. But choice is good and BMW is providing plenty of it.

Significant price difference, but do LOVE the 5 GT tho. Not much else out there like it, and should be very luxurious, roomy, and sporty with a slightly higher seat height for increased comfort. Really, it's an ideal combination for me. Don't see too much point in a 3 GT however since I can't see the smaller size (in the same format) having a utility benefit over the 3 Touring or X1/X3.

I like BMW and I like compact SUVs, but I don't like the X1. The interior design is nice, but I don't like the exterior. If any utility is removed from the package (rear passenger room, cargo, ground clearance), I don't see the point for this type of vehicle (the same goes for the Infinity EX).

X1 vs X3
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=383305
Appears to be the same size

Yes, already been noted somewhere on here. The "current" X3 and the new X1 are very close in size. BUT, the next X3, coming about 2011 or 2012 MY, will be larger.

Straight up:  it annoys me because I'm a hyperbole-prone forum poster who cares a lot about the brand image of cars I can't afford.

How's that for honesty?   ;D

I recently had chance for a short test drive of a X1 23da.

I was not expecting much, as I thought it would be cramped inside and the ride harsh, yet bouncy with too much body roll and vague steering. To my surprise the car (or whatever) was composed yet comfortable and steered well.

It's not the most spacious vehicle in terms of rear seat leg room or cargo capacity, but the front of the cabin felt spacious enough for someone around 6'0" or even taller. It felt more spacious than the 3 series coupe, sedan or wagon, thanks to its larger windows and more headroom.

It does not feel as luxurious inside as a Q5 as it lacks of the bling and the sea of buttons, but on the other hand the ride is more comfortable than the Q5 (at least compared to the S-line version with 19" wheels).

I can now see the appeal of this vehicle for someone who does not need as much space or luxury as an X5 offers and appreciates the X1's superior handling.

I believe the VW (Tiguan) was the first of this segment to arrive in North America.

Audi's (Q3) and MB's (BLK/MLK/something with a K) are on it's way!  ;D

Any guesstimates on the price?

15% more than what they charge in the USA.  ;)
