(Almost) Entered the Matrix
« on: July 03, 2009, 01:58:14 pm »
That was fun.  I was taking the Hunt Club bridge westbound on my bike on my way into work this morning, merging onto the northbound Prince of Wales Drive.  I was really cooking it coming down the bridge so, as I was signalling for my turn onto Prince of Wales, I deliberately moved to the centre of the dedicated right turn lane knowing that I was going fast enough that I needed to take it wide.  Well, a woman in a last-gen medium blue Toyata Matrix wasn't going to wait for a bike rider....Nosiree!  She squeezed between me and the curb on the left, practically brushing me with her door handles and found that *she* was going too fast for her own turn and tromped on the brakes!  Thank God I was already starting my own evasive maneuvers before that particular bit of silliness because I was already braking and cutting right when she hit the brakes.  This time *I* brushed past her (I know, everthing's relative) on her right and continued on up the bike lane that she was straddling by this time in her fit of got-to-get-ahead-itis.  Thank you very much!

"Honestly, officer!  I don't know where that stupid cyclist came from.  He just slammed into my back while I was waiting for a gap in the traffic!"

Actually I was thinking of the risk you're taking each time you ride to work.  Just seeing if your family will be provided for in case of car 1 you 0.

Isn't riding a bike so much fun  ;D

I think I met this lady before as she passed me going down a hill towards a stop sign where the speed limit is only 40kph. Now I can easily hit 50kph (53kph with a big lunch) without pedalling so there was no reason to even pass me. Then while she is right beside me she starts to move back towards the curb making me decide should I run into the curb or do an emergency stop and get behind the car....I choose the later. Then pulled up beside her to :censor: her out to only get this reply...."You have no right to even ride you bike on the road so :censor: off".

Some people are so nice.

You should have reached through the window, pulled out one of her eyeballs with your fingers and eaten it.   Then ridden away. :o

I consider myself lucky that this was the worst thing that's happened to me in 2 months of riding.  At least one of was paying attention.

The odds are against you. Stick to riding your bike in Gatineau Parc and your odds will improve.

Do you realize that in about 40 years, we'll have thousands of old ladies running around with tattoos?

I thought the only cougars they had over there were of the two-legged variety.

Do you wear one of these types of things? I find they really help on the motorcycle. Wore something similar when I bicycled in the winter in Saskatoon, and it was equally useful.

Probably the more you look like a cycle cop, the better.

Yeah but the taste is not good, so he will end up eating only the legs, ehehheeh.

Something similar happened to me a month or so ago (no cougar involved) ;D. I was going down the street very close to the right curb, was doing 55 km/h or so. I was very focused on the street since a fall at that speed could be nasty. Then I spot a bus on my left speeding up just to stop at a bus stop a few meters ahead. Rapidly I started to brake just in time to climb on the sidewalk and avoiding the chance to become a part of the bus engine.

Pretty sure it doesn't attract anybody  :-X

I resist wearing it, as it is not exactly 'cool', but it makes such a huge and obvious difference in how traffic treats me I put it on anyway, at least commuting home at quitting time.

There's a reason why cops and traffic crews working in traffic are going to that exact, eye-searing shade of yellow.

One of Import Queen's helmets has a really cool flashing LED light bar on the back of it.  It's REALLY cool.  Great helmet for the money to BTW.  WebBikeworld Helmet of the Year for 2007 to boot.  GMAX GM68S.  Great helmet..great price.  Don't the have something like that for bicycles??
