US pony-car sales
« on: July 01, 2009, 11:02:54 pm »
The race is on: 2010 Mustang versus 2010 Camaro.  And GM won round 1.  GM sold 9,320 Camaros in June, while Ford sold 7,632 Mustangs.  GM also has 10,000 Camaros back-ordered right now.

Part of this might be due to the fact that the Camaro is a new model, whereas the Mustang is a mid-generation update (albeit a massive update, with big suspension improvements and a great leap forward in the interior).

Chrysler got hosed, with only 1,369 Challenger sales in June.

Doesn't hurt to have a hot action oriented movie franchise promote the brand, either.  I refer, of course, to the two Transformers movies.

As for me, while I don't hold much desire to own such a beast, I've always been partial to the Mustang.  Certainly that would be the one I'd buy if I actually got the itch (not to mention the $cratch) to do so. ;) ;D

Agreed, and a darn big "part of it" too....this is the early going for the Camaro and all the Camaro-fanboys are buying. In a year's time, Camaro sales will be poor (unless gas is a lot cheaper, which is not likely).

True that.  I thought about editing my post but came to the conclusion that the blatant GM tags everywhere on the "good guys" would lead people to the correct reference of the Camaro and not the Ford.

-----------

BTW, the 2nd movie is quite good, just a bit overwhelming with all the action they've managed to shove into each scene.  It's sometimes hard to figure out exactly what is happening in detail owing to the scope of each "set" as well as the speed, dust and NOISE that two or more Transformers can generate when fighting. ;D

Bring your earplugs. ;D

BTW #2:  If you had a choice between Witwicky and Ladiesman217 as a moniker, which would you choose? :rofl2: :rofl2:

Certainly not always and particularly not if you count total F body production. You can even count Fox body Capris if you want.

The last time the F-bodies outsold the Mustang, was 1993.  That was the year of the new style Camaro with the terrific engine.  Then in 1994, the SN95 Mustang came out and out-sold them again.  So the Camaro has outsold the Mustang twice in 16 years (and this time the year isn't over yet).  So not always....but generally speaking...a very long time indeed...

Well, the combined F body sales beat the Mustang all but three years from 1982 to 1992. The Mustang reversed that in the following 10 years.

If you look at the 70's, the F Body was THE car. Half a million F bodies were sold in 1979!

For June 2009, Hyundai sold 1,838 Genesises (Genesi?) in the States.  That's coupe AND sedan.

COMBINED sales.  ::)  Let's look at the best sellers...Mustang and Camaro.  A bit unfair to compare combined sales when the Mustang had a twin for only 6 years out of 35 years or so.

From 1967-2002, the Camaro has outsold the Mustang only in 1977, 1978,1984,1985, and finally in 1991 (I thought it was 1993..guess not!)

So in 35 years....the Mustang has been on top for 30 of those.  Not too shabby.

I've always considered the Firebird just a different trim level of Camaro.    Kinda like the Silverado/Sierra pick-em-ups.

The Camaro, Mustang and even Challenger (despite low sales) have cult followings and histories that go back to 1964 in the case of the 'Stang.  This is a tremendous advantage.
No place I'd rather be...
