CTC Review: 2010 Ford Mustang GT

$37,000 is the price for the much nastier Camaro V-8.  I do prefer the size of the Mustang, but I think Chev trounces it with the bang/buck equation.

But in my one mag, (C&D, July 2009) they picked the overall more competent Mustang as the winner....(and the Camaro wasn't as fast as I thought it would be)

Just kidding.  I actually really do like the Mustang's interior.  Comparing the 2010 Mustang to the 2010 Camaro is like comparing a GTI to a Cobalt SS Turbo.  [EDIT: In the sense that one is a well-rounded performance car with a superb interior, and the other offers a more unilateral focus on performance but a less pleasant interior, but both are good cars for the price].

With the new 5.0l engine coming out next year, the mustang ( lighter weight) will be just as nasty and have the same bang for the buck as the camaro.

The new 32-valve, 5.0-liter V8 is expected to be fitted to the Mustang and F-150 sometime in 2010, replacing the current 4.6- and 5.4-liter mills. And with the inevitable option of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 making its way under the Mustang's hood, Ford looks to be bringing the fight to the new Chevrolet Camaro.

Russell Christophers, FoMoCo's U.S. team is working on an all-new, aluminum double-overhead cam 5.0-liter V8 – codenamed "Coyote" – with output expected to crest 400 hp and around 400 lb-ft of torque. Christophers told Australia's Drive, "I have seen the performance curves and it is a pretty good engine."

NEVER been a Mustang fan - but I must say I like the LOOK of this new one the best. Having said that there should be some kind of law about how many Mustangs are allowed to be licensed in a given city. I'm sick of them - especially the V6s which every kid seems to own. I welcome the arrival of the Camaro but after having seen the interiors of the two I must say the Ford is much nicer overall.

Just curious about what other vehicles the author has driven around that track? Top Gear is notorious for trashing the handling of any NA sports car - and sadly they are usually right. But if its the only sports car you've driven around a track then I guess it would have performed incredibly.

I've driven many cars around the track, S2000 tons of times, Saab 9-3, Corvette Z06, Mercedes SL55 AMG, Porches, Subaru STi etc to name a few.  I drive more on the track than I do on the road!

TopGear is more about entertainment don't take their stuff to seriously, it's a great show but honestly they like picking on american cars because it's funny not necessarily because it is true.

Interestingly, when I drove the RX-8 for a solid week then drove the GT, the GT did feel much more ponderous...relatively speaking.

Yes...that intoxicating sound is enhanced by "an industry-first Induction Sound Tube (IST), which enhances the driving experience by piping the sound of the induction system directly into the passenger compartment."

One of the most interesting things I find about the 2010 Mustang is that the word "retro" is almost never seen in the reviews. I remember reading much hand-wringing questions about how Ford could design the next Mustang because they were "stuck" with the '05 retro design. Ford seems to have perfectly managed the transition from "retro muscle car" image to a modern sport coupe image both inside and out. This is one aspect where the Camaro is definitely one generation behind. It may have the more more modern rear suspension but it's image is all late 60's retro Camaro. The Challenger is even worse off image wise. Other than nostalgia, it has very little going for it.

Actually, Top Gear has praised the ZR1, CTS-V and seemed to enjoy the Viper.

Still have yet to drive the Camaro, but I am starting to think that I would pick the Ford....

I was surprised the Camaro outsold the Mustang last month in the US.  I think the 'stang looks real nice.  It might look too much like the old model, so people might crave something fresh like the Camaro. 

Anyhow, the 'stang convertible looks amazing.

Absolutely.  I know the next Gen Fords are going to be good because the level of quality and detail they have for their parts on the manufacturing end.  If I can see if here..in the trenches...the consumers will definitely see it...
