10W60 oil??
« on: June 27, 2009, 07:00:16 pm »
My new Duke takes 10W60 oil.  Made by Motorex.  And it's facking expensive at $22.00 per litre.  My dealer says you have to use ONLY this oil because KTM use a "special" coating on bearings and whatnot.  Personally, I feel this is BS.  Motorex is the OEM supplier for all KTM engines...so they have a relationship.

I know that the BMW M Series cars use 10W60.  I'm thinking the "60" designation would be the most important thing to consider for my engine...though I'm not 100% sure since I've never had a bike with a slipper clutch.

Can anyone comment on this?
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

I betcha that a Google search would find other 10w60s with identical properties or a look and a question on BITOG

For sure BS. Same story way back in 04 when I picked up my 525 EX/C. I would still use a quality synthetic. I used mostly Motul 10W-50 IIRC.

It's an expensive, high performance bike, so I've got no problem using the oil that KTM recommends. It's a little cheaper if you get it in the four-litre jug. I order the jugs through my dealer and the price works out to $15.75 per litre.

Have you priced out any synthetic, automotive 10W-60 oils? I'm sure they're expensive too, but even if you could save ten bucks a litre, why risk it? The crankcase only holds 1.7 litres, and the oil change interval is 5,000 kms, so your savings would probably amount to twenty bucks a year.

Kind of reminds me of those threads where someone buys a BMW, then asks if they really need to put premium gas in it.  ;)

Oh well, I just had to order another jug and it looks like the price has gone up since last fall. It's now $89 for the 4-litre jug, which works out to a little over $22 per litre.  :(

Still cheap enough at less than $40 per oil change, though. Plus another $23 for the two oil filters, of course.
