Squeaking Noise when A/C on - 02' P5
« on: June 24, 2009, 09:57:34 pm »
So on the weekend (Sat), my friend's dad and I changed many parts on the P5. Hes a mechanic at a Mazda dealer.

We changed the timing belt, water pump, coolant, alternator belt, and the spark plugs.

So on Monday, I was driving with the windows down and A/C on (to get the hot air out), and heard this very loud squeaking sound from the front end, at random times  ??? I thought it was the timing belt or something.

Today, I noticed when I turned on the A/C, the sound would come, and when I turned it off, it went away.

Any suggestions on whats wrong?  ??? A/C works fine.

AC belt needs tightening.  Not uncommon after re-install.

Really? Thats it? How much would a place charge for that?

It was REALLY LOUD today. It was embarrassing, my friends were asking me what was wrong with my car, and people in other cars were staring.

Yep.  It was fine before it was loosened and it will be fine when it gets enough tension.

Try it yourself.  There will be two bolts to unloosen and then use a pry bar to stretch the system.  It might even have an adjuster mechanism, but doubt it.

Sweet, thanks.

Aren't those two bolts hard to access? There were so many steps to change the belt...his dealer charges 5 hours of labor, but we did it in 2.5 hrs.  ;D

Ok so I tightened the alternator belt. That noise has since been gone when A/C is on.

HOWEVER, the squealing noise that happens when I first turn on the car still happens ONCE IN A WHILE. It happens for 5-10 seconds, then stops. It gets louder if I rev the car. VERY LOUD sound.

What is it now? The timing belt? Pulleys need greasing?  :(

Still the drive belts.  Retighten or try a bar of soap run on the sides of the belts while they are turning.  Watch your fingers.  If that fails, then replace belt.

 ???

The belts are brand new and have been retightened by a mechanic. I watched him do it. There are two tightening areas, right? [A/C + P/S], and [alternator + waterpump] ?

I read somewhere that it could be the alternator making the sound, something about overcharging when you first start up the car?  ???

Could it be the timing belt AT ALL?

It's not uncommon for a replacement belt not to seat adequately as the previous belt or it stretched a wee bit and needs an additional adjustment.  Maybe it's too tight.

I read somewhere that it could be the alternator making the sound, something about overcharging when you first start up the car?

Possible, not since it was not evident with the old belt on then it's unlikely.

Could it be the timing belt AT ALL?

It would be constant and damage would be imminent.  If the allowable mileage and time is OK I would focus my attention back to the drive belt.

You know drive belts are sold mainly by length.  It might be the correct length, but not exactly the same width as the original or style.  Are they V belts?

When the belts on my car were changed I had to back two or three times to get the proper tension set.

Alright, so I am guessing the belts were not tightened properly. They are not OEM belts. I guess its always best to buy OEM.

I will get them re tightened and see what happens.

I have a similar (though nowhere near as loud) on my P5.

The one chap stated that the Goodyear Gatorback belts have a tendency to be really "squeally".

Interesting.  The AC belt on my Caravan is a Gatorback and it has to be re-tightened at least once a year to keep the squeals at bay.  Methinks there's too much drag in the compressor.

I am actually not sure what brand of belt it is. I bought it from NAPA.
